This is more informational than a question. I just filed my taxes for 2020. Usually I owe nothing and get nothing back since all my taxes are paid in China. As an American expat, we get an exemption on the first $139,000 earned, so most do not owe taxes. But, it is still required to file each year. If audited, penalties and fines can add up greatly.
Also, this year I am getting $600. I think this is the second payoff to Americans for Covid. Therefore, it might be worth submitting your taxes this year.
Question: Americans...have you been filing every year with the IRS? I am curious if other countries require their expats to file every year.
I have filed most years that I have been here. I think I did not file my first or second year. It does seem silly to have to file paperwork when no money is owed to the government, or no money is received from the government. I guess it is necessary to keep thousands of IRS and other employees employed.

I might be wrong but I thought having to file while living overseas was just an American thing.
