Q: Ang Lee should have thanked China?

Ang Lee made a lot of money from Hollywood. but no one is clamoring for him to thank america . what exactly did China do to help make Life of Pi.

will his movies now be banned in china?

what's next, jeremy lin should thank china for his success?

China likes to live on other people's glory, rather than earn glory for itself. Ang Lee is successful because of his own innate talents. His home country of Taiwan and his adopted country of USA gave him the opportunities to develop his skills and creativity.

The whole world knows China contributed nothing, but China expects the Chinese people will choose to embrace it as another example of China regaining it's rightful place as the centre of the world. This is the lie that China continues to attempt to sell to it's people, but the people are believing the lies less and less.

China also expects the western film industry, including Ang Lee, to support China in these lies, otherwise they will not allow them into the Chinese film market. Unfortunately for China, their ideas rarely work exactly as they envisage them, and they invariably look foolish in the eyes of the world. They also don't realise that they are increasingly looking foolish in the eyes of the Chinese people.

EDIT: Excerpt from a newspaper report about Ang Lee: The 2007 film Lust, Caution brought Mr. Lee critical acclaim but angered Sarft (China's censors), which deleted several sex scenes and reportedly forced Mr. Lee to alter dialogues towards the end of the film where a Communist agent betrays the party. Chinese actress Tang Wei, who played the agent, was subsequently banned by Sarft for several years and blacklisted from working in the mainland. Only recently has she been allowed to emerge from the government-imposed ban.

All traveler's doing is making a sensible and logical point and the feelings of the Chinese people must be strong enough to withstand.... ah, actually, forget I said anything.

No. It is like me thanking Ireland. Anybody who looks Chinese the Chinese will claim as its own. Even though the person will have no connection to the country.

I tutor a student who attends a movie production and editing class in Shanghai. I asked him this question since he is somewhat "in the industry".

His reply, "He is from Taiwan so he should thank China. He didn't thank China but his heart is Chinese so we know he loves his country".

I'm not sure what the heck that means.

No. China is a little sensitive about getting recognition, whether it is deserved or not. I remember during the Vancouver Olympics a Chinese short track speed skater won a gold medal, but the next day in the media all I heard about was how some government official was critical of her victory speech because she had the audacity to thank her parents before thanking her country.

crimochina:

damn straight. her mother only carried her for 9 months. but her country carried her for 5000 years.

On a similar vein, I almost had a riot in my classroom two years ago. We were talking about notable Asian Americans and when I mentioned Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco my class went nuts! They were adamant that he was born in a particular town in Guandong (I forget which one).  When I asked "do you mean his father?" the emphatically said no, Bruce Lee is Chinese who only lived in America.

Traveler:

I don't think Bruce Lee ever lived in China, though I may be wrong.

However, he did once beat the living daylights out of a Chinese national who, along with a group of other Chinese nationals, demanded that Bruce stop teaching Kung Fu to Caucasians. Apparently, Chinese racism and bullying was alive and well as far back as the early 1960s.

The organised private fight reportedly lasted only 3 minutes, with the American Lee forcing the Chinese challenger to admit defeat while pinned to the ground. The Chinese challengers claimed the fight lasted a marathon 20 minutes, but would not state the result. Lee was "granted permission" by the Chinese to continue teaching Kung Fu to Caucasians.

GuilinRaf:

UPDATE:

Just got back from dinner with friends.

As an "experiment" I asked them where was Bruce Lee from. One said he was from Guangdong, but the others corrected him saying that he was from Hong Kong.

I then asked about his son and daughter.

One of them said the son "is maybe Chinese" but were emphatic that Bruce Lee did not have a daughter.

Australia only has a small population, and a short (western) history, but we have won lots of Oscars, and a few Australians have even hosted the Academy Awards.

crimochina:

god damn great minds think alike. i was spit balling the idea of posting "how many films/ songs have become  popular outside of china since 1950?" (you can't  count HK/ Taiwan ) countries with the fraction of the pop of beijing have done this. and they do not even have the resources.

You seem to be quite largely preoccupied with the size of Chinese genitalia. More so in fact than you suggest they are themselves. Are you aware of that?

crimochina:

i know it is difficult for you to understand. but "3 inch mentality" is the name i coined for the chinese inferiority complex. petty , delusional, cowardice, always seeing themselves as the victim, telling themselves they are superior race and have a long history but the reality is they are physically small, weak, stupid (from their education system) and can not invent or create anything. civilizations that they say are 100s of years old are about 100 years ahead of them in development and technology.

i know, the truth hurts. which is why you try to go off topic.

I'm well aware that the truth hurts. Personally I think that the truth is you are scared of China's development. I think you're scared and it's causing you to behave in a way that I think can be summed up in three words: three inch mentality.

You know how it goes. I know you've seen the olympics and heard that the olympians from China were pretty upset that some very important people only congratulated the gold medal winners instead of all the winners silver and bronze.

It's first or nothing here. If they or he didn't thank China first of course they would be upset. The only other example I could think of at the moment that just recently happened was with the Olympians at the London Olympics. I actually heard it was sort of bad.

Sad but true, the Chinese have one of the worst names at the Olympics, probably the worst.
