Q: Is Angelina's ESL Cafe legit or a scam?

Because I made the mistake of leaving a single resume at that Swiss Hotel job fair a few months ago, I have been buried in spam every day since.  I am hearing from every dam recruiter in Beijing, Shanghai, and even South China agents in Hangzhou and Guangzhou.  One of the more "regular" and "determined" spammers is Angelina's ESL Cafe, which claims to be part of the Ministry of Education and "endorsed by SAFEA".  I did not know that SAFEA "endorsed" any school, much less an agent??? I was referred to a bunch of review sites that all praise Angelina's - so much so that I suspect the reviews my not be, uh... from real expat teachers.  Anyway, Angelina's seems to have been in operation since 2004.  Does this make them a safe bet?  Any first-hand experience or links would be appreciated.  Xie xie!

I am not a teacher, so I am not really qualified to comment. But I had a look at their website.

I found this little gem under FAQs:

"When leaving China, you must give over your Residency Permit at Immigration and your original visa becomes invalid."

I don't know how I can do that. The RP is stuck inside my passport. There are a few more gems in that section. Very surprising given the number of western staff in the company.

Looks like any other agent to me.

I have had some contact with Angelina's ESL cafe but I think it largely depends on how lucky you get with the individual agents. While I am sure there are some horror cases with this agent as with others, I generally found it reliable in setting me up with some schools in Guangdong.

This was a couple of years ago however and I should say that things might have changed. Having recently seen that most positions are advertised as filled I guess the agent has started going down the dark path that most Chinese agents take eventually and would therefore be less reliable.

If looking for a job I would always recommend contacting schools or companies directly though - in that case you can just ignore their e-mails.

I sent them my CV couple of times, and wrote codes of jobs/cities I'm interested.

They managed to conduct one interview with Public School in Baoding more than a year ago.

However, I'm Non-naive, so they might push my CV harder, what I'm sure they don't.

I'm using their web link of Schools in China, authorized to hire FT:

http://www.anesl.com/schools/ info.asp?province=Guangdong& keyword=University&cmd=Search

It's possible to contact Schools direct from the web link, but I never get any reply (for some 5 Schools I contacted).

Thanks but I just found this over at Dave's eslcafe and I don't think I will be replying to any emails from Angelina in this lifetime!

http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=58486

" I will be very up-front and factual about this touchy issue. I have no personal experience working for Angelina. However in recent days I met somoene who did after I posted a link about Angelina's ESL Cafe (anesl.com & anesl.cn) using a fake white list to convince prospects that all their client schools are safe, when in fact some are actually blacklisted.

This is in part what I had discovered and what I confirmed to be true with an actual SAFEA officlals in Beijing:

1. Angelina's ESL Cafe is NOT part of any government ministry or agency.

2. Angelina's ESL Cafe is NOT endorsed by SAFEA which does not endorse any agency. SAFEA registers foreigners and schools - NOT agents nor recruiters.

3. SAFEA denies that they have ever issued any white list or endorsed any school or is "affiliated" with any agency.

How did I find this all out? Here is what I did when I thought I was visiting a real "white list" being promoted at www.aensl.com and www.aensl.cn was promoting a phony "SAFEA School White List" that contains all of the schools she recruits for on her web site. Here below is the link and part of what is being discussed at Dave's...

http://www.anesl.com/schools/info.asp?province=&page=1

I called over to SAFEA and spoke with a woman in the office named "Song" and asked her if I could get an updated copy of the SAFEA "white list" and she had no idea what I was talking about. After I explained it to her, she said there was no such "white list" put out by SAFEA!

I then asked Song for a list of schools that are "endorsed" by SAFEA and she flat out told me that SAFEA is not allowed to "endorse" any school. So when I described what I was looking at online she told me that is the "SAFEA REGISTRATION OF EVERY SCHOOL THAT IS LICENSED TO HIRE FOREIGNERS IN BEIJING"

So after hearing all this I surely became suspicious as to how Angelina's could be calling this a "White List" and then I see that all the schools she promotes on her web site, are indeed on this fake "SAFEA WHITE LIST"

So then I started to wonder is Angelina's ESL Cafe at anesl.com was legit or not and started googling and found they are blacklisted in quite a few places on various ESL/TEF forums and here as well:

http://www.chinaforeignteachersunion.org/2012/12/china-foreign-teachers-union-posts-esl.html

http://worldwolfwatch.wordpress.com

http://chinascambusters.com

What is also quite interesting is that the teaching jobs advertised at Angelina's offer even lower salaries than China ESL !!! Can I say Angelina's ESL Cafe is a scam for sure? Not really. But I can say that they are grossly misleading people with false statements and unethical marketing methods. I was contacted by a former client of Angelina's who insists they are a scam and I gave him this link and suggested he come tell his story. I just told mine so I bid you all good luck in your teaching careers."

BTW... how come this negative stuff (lots of it on pages 6-12) did not show up on Google and Baidu when I searched for "Angelina's ESL Café"?????

Almost:

Also thanks to the ECC user who sent me this link as well:
