Q: Any advice for buying a new washing machine in China?

The one in my apartment is yuck. I figure if I'm going to use it while I'm here, might as well get a good one that will clean my clothes and stay clean after they have been washed.

Anyone have experience with the kind with the door on the front than on the top? Does is really make a difference?

Front or top. is not the right thing to look at, you need to consider if you want one that can heat the water or one that just splashes your dirty undies around in cold water. If you get one that can heat, you need to be aware that most washing powder in China is intended for cold water washing so the enzymes in it might not be effective in warm water. If your skidmarks are persistent, then you probably would want hot water washing.

If you are going to stay for more than a year, get a brand you've heard of before and look at energy rating. If you are not staying long, get the cheapest one you can find.

Alternatively, you can also just go down to the nearest fountain and wash your clothes in the algae-infested water like the old women do.

We had LG frontloader before moving to China. It was silent and did not have any issues.

get a siemens. hard to destroy it... even in china.

if you dont care much about the price and that energy then definitly take a heated one that can wash with 120°C

this dirty water in china is not even good for washing clothes

top or front is usually a indicator of how long it will last. its the way it is constructed. front is better tho, top is more comfortable

Quote. I got a Siemens 3 years ago, front door, hot water, energy class 1. Paid 3300rmb, works flawlessly. Mind the spinning rpm. 800up is good, moreover if you leave in a wet environment.

My wife had an old Siemens before the new purchase for more than 10 years. Still working good in her sister apartment.

This is one of my many pet peeves.  I'm rigging a system to wash my clothes in reverse osmosis water.  Chinese water is filthy, not worthy even to wash clothes with.  As for front or top loading,  front loading, tumble machines are easier on your clothes.  They are more compact because they don't need the center spindle that top loaders have.  Also they are easier on the back.  More expensive too.

I bought a 5kg Electrolux top loader washing machine for 999RMB about 18 months ago, no problems except the lint collector bag ripped when I was cleaning it after about 8 months of use, but they replaced it for free.

At home, and here, I don't wash in hot water, for one thing, if your clothes are stained (especially blood) hot water will bake it in, not help you clean it. Cold water with detergent designed to work with cold water is the way to go, easier on the environment, helps prevent shrinking clothes, and think of all that electricity you are saving.

If you are worried about bugs there are loads of anti-bacterial detergents you can add to your load.

As for top vs front, I don't have an opinion, I bought this machine because it was cheap, uses little energy and water, and is a name brand I recognize.

We bought a Bosch when we moved here two and a half years ago. The cost was around 2,000rmb and never had a problem with it. Front loaders are definitely the ones to go for, the wash action is better for the clothes.
