Q: Any cool Chinese mythological beasts?

I was always into Greek mythological monsters as a kid - does China have any of these (except dragons) that can match up to the likes of the medusa and the minotaur?

There was that giant pig with the fan and the monkey king. He has magical powers and can fly on a cloud was what I heard. I think they match up fairly nicely with medussa and minotaur.

No similarity that I can see, Very well deserved thumbs down.

凤凰 大鹏 麒麟 九头鸟

凤凰 is phoenix. the king of all the birds. It's the totem for Chinese as well as the dragon.
大鹏 can fly 18,000 (half) metric kilometers with its wings beating once.
In ancient Chinese mythology, the god of water 共工 has a human image but a snake body. The god of fire 祝融 has a human image too but with a beast body.
well 哪吒 is said to have three heads and six arms (三头六臂). Buddha gave him reincarnation out of a lotus flower.

Thanks for that oChina. But isn't the phoenix from Egyptian mythology orginally?

ohChina:

I was wondering about that too haha. I like Happy Potter and the Order of Phoenix.

Just looked it up and it's said that Chinese phoenix looks more like peacock and western phoenix looks more like eagle. Is that true?

ohChina:

By the way in Chinese 凤 is the male bird and 凰 is the female bird. How is that in Egyptian mythology?

I'm not too sure to be honest! I think there is a difference between the phoenix in Western mythologies and the Asian Fenghuang, I'm sure a quick Wikipedia will solve that issue!

ohChina: The pictures are great, and thanks for including them. However, it would be much easier on the eye if you could use smaller pictures, and not those that are so large they run out of the reply column, and even off the page. Again, quite informative.

The Kung Fu Panda on his own can use the powerful Wuxi Finger Hold and defeat both Medusa and the Minotaur at the same time with its brilliant, rippling shockwave of energy that extends for miles.

The laowai. This includes anyone who comes from a country that once occupied China, and they are feared so much, the government teaches the children to hate them incessantly.

These mythical beasts reportedly plundered the land, ravaged the women and ate small children. Try as they might, the Chinese couldn't rid the land of them, until they were vanquished by the mighty Emperor Mao.

In recent years, the laowai have been returning, and once again ravage the women. Alas, there is not much left of the land to plunder...

Pi Xiu, is a mythical animal in ancient times. The mouth and belly are big, it eats but never defecates. It has small wings on its fore and aft quarters. It is the symbol of saving money. Usually there are two displayed at the entrance of a home to keep the inhabitance safe. We have two at the entrance to our home. Franck3
