Q: Any good English E-book sites I can access from China?

Anyone know of any good e-book sites I can get to from here?

My hobbies are secularism and cosmology and a bit of philosophy, so not your run of the mill routine stuff, I would be looking for Christopher Hitchens, Lawrence Krauss, Sam Harris, Dan Dennet, Richard Dawkins, that kind of thing.

Thanks

I've always been able to access amazon while here. If I want to buy a book I have to use an American credit card (which is my debit card with visa logo) but all of their classics are free, anyway, and I can check out ebooks online through my hometown library using my library card.

http://www.manybooks.net - thousands and thousands of classic novels, articles and reports published in the public domain or that have expired copyrights. I've downloaded about 300 books from them.

http://www.booksshouldbefree.com - smaller site but they also have audiobooks for streaming and downloading. I give it to my students to practice their listening.

Hugh - have you tried those sites? And had much success with what you're looking for? Your interests are similar to mine!

(Btw, Swinburne University in Melbourne, does a Master of Science (Astronomy) online, with virutally NO maths/physics!!!! And, yes, it is a real degree... from a real university!)

Hugh.G.Rection:

The sites 981 gave are great sites but I couldn't find anything in the fields I was looking for, I'll have a look at the newer sites in the next few days.

I REALLY want to read up on Prof Lawrence Krauss, Prof De Grasse Tyson, and the late Christopher Hitchens, I also want to get Prof Richard Dawkins The Greatest Show on Earth and Prof Daniel Dennett's views on Philosophy as I'm not sure I 100% agree with some of his views but I want to read what he's said first.

Then longer term I also want to get an intro to the maths of cosmology although I fear that really isnt going to be a beginner level topic and my maths is rusty and at best 'A' level anyway, but from what I've read you really cannot properly understand cosmology unless you understand the maths. It's like trying to study Chinese culture without learning the language.

Just curious - where do you stand on 'intelligent design'?

As a pom, I'm sure you have a slightly different interpretation of that than the yanks - because in America, ID = Fundy Christian pseudo-science. However, when I was introduced to it, it was through philosophy (my last degree subject - God and the Natural Sciences), so we had a distinctly more scientific and philosophical version. And, of course, Dawkins played a large role in that. So did Paul Davies.

Have you heard of Lee Smolin?? He has ideas on 'baby universes' - where black holes may lead to. Makes for interesting discussions on the nature of our reality (and 'laws' of physics). I think some of his ideas are similar to Hawkings (but, IIRC, Smolin's preceded Hawkings...)
