Q: Any good hospitals in Wuhan for foreigners to have a baby?

We are expecting a baby this year and want to find a better hospital. Have anyone of you guys had the same experience here? It would be better if we could find a hospital with English speaking doctors. By the way, we live in Hankou and my wife prefers to have a natural birth.

Hi and first up congratulations to you both on becoming parents!!

since you are living in hankou so I would suggest try to go to Tongji University teaching hospital in chinese it is known as tongji daxue you can find english speaking doctors over there or else I would suggest you to come to wuchang and look for the doctors who can speak english either in Renmin Hospital which is near the wuchang railway station  and the hospital is known as renmin yiyuan or you can also come to zhongnan hospital which is located at donghu lu , you can tell the taxi driver to take you to Zhongnan yiyuan but its far from hankou .Actually both these hospital are the teaching hospitals of wuhan university .

I would suggest avoiding all incarnations of Maria Maternity Hospitals unless you have a lot of money. They advertise one price, but by the time you get there, they more than double the costs you have to pay. And they refuse all service until you pay all additional, hidden fees.

They are one of the cleanest, most professional places I've seen in China, but... they cheat. I felt safe inside because they actually seemed to be doing everything right... other than the hidden fees part.

If you go against the government inside the buildings like I did, you'll be brought in for questioning, and they'll be asking about your "mental health." You know... wanting to see your baby on the ultrasound? Yeah, only nutjobs do that, and then they'll call you a fugging psycho and all that stuff. And "warmly encourage" you to obey the laws and statues of the People's Republic of China.

However, if you've got the money, they're definitely worth it. They WILL rip you off if you're a foreigner, though. Here's the address:

武汉玛丽亚妇产医院 (click for baidu map link)

128 Zhongshan Rd, Wuchang, Wuhan, Hubei, China

+86 27 8885 8965

EDIT: when I was there, I was able to speak English with a doctor there. The doctor's English was a little rough, but... we were able to communicate. They do seem to have a lot of other birth options like "Hypno-birthing," "Hydro-birthing," etc. So I'm sure they're fine with a natural childbirth. However, don't be surprised if they say, "The baby can't come out, because it is a foreigner. C-Section!"

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
