Q: Any good stories about Chinese business dinners?
My roommate came home drunk last night after his first Chinese business dinner with his bosses. They had just finished a major section of a project and wanted to celebrate. So they took a case of Great Wall red wine to a restaurant and proceed to drink a lot with 7 out of the 10 people in attendance ending up throwing up. Anyone else have good stories to share on the topic?
Drinking low quality red wine and blowing chunks does not make a good story. Tragically this is how all business dinners are. The worse ones end in a KTV.
Business dinners go like this 99% of the time:
Business guy: "Do our hooker, unless you have the wife. Otherwise, drink our alcohol."
Business guy: "Oh. Why you will not drink our alcohol?"
take your pick:
Me: "I am a religious fanatic." / "I am allergic" / "I refuse to drink it."
Business guy: "Why are Americans so religious? Just drink it!" / "Who cares if you are allergic! Just drink it!" / "Just drink it!"
Me: "'cause we can be. No, I'm not drinking it." / "Allergic means I will die if I drink it. If you make me drink it, I will die." / "No, don't ask me again. You don't want to make me drink. You wouldn't like me when I drink."
Business guy: "Whatever. Just teach English."
You forgot to finish your story. The part where they go home, pass out, wake up with a bitching hangover, and then still have to report to work on time the next morning....so as not to lose face, or something.
Have you ever been drunk at the Hospital?
Headmaster in Jixian, Hebei asked me if I would 'teach' English one of the cities MDs. I agreed, and ask Head for meeting with the doctor.
When I arrived to Hospital, doctor was waiting for me, and showed me around at big (more than 5 buildings) Hospital.
Then, we went to the Hospital's (250 seats) canteen. Doctor (neurosurgeon), me and chef were only present. Eat, drink 'white wine' (Baozi), and talk English.
At the end I could hardly walk, and I was safely taken to my home by Hospital's driver.
My adult family members are all physicians, and none have ever been drunk at their workplace. 'Only in China!' drawer.
I'm always getting drunk on that sort of meeting so I stopped going there. Last time we all were drinking through out the dinner and everyone was "gan-be-ing" each other. One of the business msn disappeared and was found by his driver at the entrance lounge. Everyone was asking me where he is and I said - seriously- I have no idea. The problem was at the end of the night when I was going home and sat in a car. I realized that the guy next to me that I been drinking with the whole night is the driver. I quietly prayed twice and checked the seat belt twice - just in case.
