If you carry a PR of China passport, and are a citizen of China, no, you will not need a visa.

If you are not a citizen of China, or carry another passport, then yes, you will.

In all honestly I have no idea if you will need the visa if your passport was issued by HKG, since I never faced that answer before.  Maybe Techezee can shed some light here.

Hongkongnese are also 'foreigner' in China, therefore they need the same visa, do the same health checks, etc...

HK Chinese citizens do not need a visa or a working visa to work in China, although the date of 2050 is the date when all pwoer will be transferred, it's still considered part of China

Luggi: the person asking the question did not give either his nationality, nor from where is the passport he uses, so that left at least three possibilities.  That he was a "foreigner", a Chinese national  residing in HKG, or a person born in HKG with the corresponding passports.  He just said that he had relocated from KHG to Shanghai.

Trying hard to give complete answers as I normally do, I covered all three possibilities.  And even if I knew that as a native from HKG he did not need a visa to enter China, I was not sure about him working here (if a visa was required for him also), since I had not faced that situation before.  This is why I deferred to Techezee, our legal resident expert guru (since he is a lawyer in China) for the correct reply on that particular case.  and he was kind enough to do so correctly.

Yet, you question me why I gave a reply if I did not know the "answer".   Either you read English, but do not understand most of it, or you do not have much brains to process what you read, nor my answer, because I gave two good ones out of three, and on the third one pointed him in the right direction.

And you, my friend, did not even consider the person's asking the question nationality in order to give a WRONG reply.  Now, who, in all honestly, you think did a better job in trying to answer the question posted ?.

ok so i did my part again...

honk kong residents (in case the user who asked is actually from hk) need no visa, but a working permit in order to work in china legally. this also includes health check etc (i met a HKnese once at one of this visa health checks).

Luggi, no hard feelings on my part.  I am not perfect either, and do make mistakes too.   Mostly when my GF walks in from a shower into the room to get dress, and my attention and concentration flies elsewhere........

i can confirm to you that those born in HKG can enter China without a visa, but as far as working without a permit I still only know what Techezee said and what you said, and you two do not match.  So, I will do some searching tomorrow.

Now, I do know an Australian who resides in HKG and does have a resident card.   But I do not know if he can enter China with that, or will need his Australian passport and visa to enter.

Sorry Luggi, thought you were just another person trying to state half truths or complete false information that is more of a hinderance than help, but on the other hand keep in mind that HK people here are not considered foreigners, Taipei people are considered foreigners and do require a working visa. All professionals regardless of citizenship require and expert certificate in China in the profession that they are working in unless it's workers

answer was: suppose hes chinese citizen he doesnt need. unless u r not hksar passport holder u need visa/permit.
