Q: Any 'laowai' received a nice hongbao?
I've been rather disappointed in this respect... I thought the hongbao (red envelope - stashed with cash) was a standard thing. A nice 'incentive' to get something done (like a higher mark, or something).
But, I've never been offered one :(
The closest I had was a student who said his father ran an international company, and they were flying overseas, and wanted me to go with them to act as a 'translator'.. (it all fell through - as I had expected it to).
Anyone else actually received one of these... 'gifts'?
Yeah 1000RMB for helping to make the business of teaching English more profitable this term than expected. Shame it cost me 600RMB to send parcels home for Christmas. Ah well........
Got around 1000 RMB at a friends' family NEw year dinner once!

Yes, the You Freaking Can't Accept a Rolex President as a Gift Act, abbreviated to FCP.

FCP Act = Foreign Corrupt Policies Act. It is technically a crime to accept any gifts from a foreign national that could in any way be considered a bribe. If caught, I could have been arrested by US authorities.
