I've strayed away from buses altogether, and subways during rush hours...
are there any plans in the really big cities in China for upgrades to the transportation systems? I mean, it's impossible at the moment to upgrade subway frequency during rush hours...they literally come one after the other with no delay...
How will China deal with rising population in places like Beijing and Shanghai?

There are, actually.
There's this one project about a 'straddling bus' that hovers above cars on highways and roads, is solar powered and can contain up to 1200 people (or 40 buses' worth of commuters).
Supposed to be in construction in Shenzhen and in Beijing. Here's a link.
That's creepy scary, the bus drivers are among the worst drivers I've ever seen!
