Q: Any reason why there haven't been many hugely critically successful Chinese films recently?

In light of the Oscars... I know there may have been some that were box office successes or made known to international audiences, but I'm talking about great films like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero, House of Flying Daggers etc that were released to critical acclaim. It seems like it's been a while since we've had one of those. I have seen some decent Chinese films in the last year or so (Wu Xia being one to note) but they haven't seemed to blow international audiences away in the way other have. Or am I wrong? Have I missed any?

I think you will find that the Chinese movies that have gotten know internationally are the ones where big movie companies like 20th Century Fox or Sony Pictures have been involved.

Also, Ang Lee obviously has talent, but he is not from China.

Isn't it interesting that China is today claiming Ang Lee as Chinese, even though they have previously banned or censored his films, and he isn't even from China - he's from Taiwan.

maybe there is a typo? i was ready to rip into your question but then i read the rest of what you wrote.

OwainLW:

Indeed it was a typo and I have altered the title accordingly. Feel free to do so though - I do enjoy a good ripping once in a while.

most of the famous ones have been indie films, some good ones, but no blockbusters.

Maybe because most of China's "block busters" tend to be the same formulaic kung-fu and "historical" style.  You can only watch so much wire-fu before you have seen what the genre has to offer.

Even when the movie has western backing, this type of movie just has a very short shelf-life in the western market.  For example, look at the horrendous flop "man with the iron fists".  Even Tarantino couldn't make that pig sing.

Because the films are mostly formulaic and lacking in every way.

Scandinavian:

yup, that is why even Kim Jong-Il had a huge collection of Hollywood movies and very few Chinese movies

It's because most of the films that are made these days in China don't cater to the Western audience anymore like it used to. Crouching Tiger was all good I agree. Now it's that movie about some chinese guys going to Thailand.

You do know some chinese guy just bought the AMC. Now he gets to add whatever film he wants from China and it doesn't even have to be a movie like Crouching Tiger either. Expect to see a lot more CHinese films being shown in the states in the future.
