Q: Any reports of horse meat found in any foreign or domestic packaged food products in China?

There is a huge criminal scandal or conspiracy in Europe concerning horse meat and now pork products found in packaged foods blatantly mislabeled as beef.

Are any expats or Chinese concerned about Chinese hypermarkets such as Carrefour or Metro, for example, stocking these mislabled products?

Does anyone have any real information on whether any responsible Chinese Government Departments are being proactive (LOL) to inspect such stores?

I'm now also concerned about domestic Chinese meat distributors of packaged food labled as beef products, or containing beef ingredients, doing the same thing. After all, it is by NO means a stretch of the imagination that there are Chinese companies that would engage in similar illegal practices to make an extra Yuan.

Remember the rancid cooking oil scandal in Chengdu restaurants? Tainted Baby milk powder? Now KFC has been under investigation for allegedly using suppliers who illegally used excessive hormones or antibiotics in their chickens.

When any scandal, to include food, is exposed in China by accident or death, the Chinese Government response is always the same...

"This will be thoroughly investigated and those responsible will be severely punished."

Why do those responsible never include the relevant government departments charged with inspections? Food inspectors, Coal mine inspectors, building inspectors, etc. ?

Why is it ONLY after someone dies or is injured, there is an army of government inspectors proudly displayed on TV sweeping the country in a vain attempt to look like they're doing their job?

Diligent and honest inspections is a NEVER ending job.

If the new Premier is truly concerned about corruption and the welfare of his people, let food safety be a top priority and DEMAND the relevant government departments be PROACTIVE and not simply REACTIVE.

I believe he will, in time, but how much time is the question.

Finally,I believe this rancid cooking oil issue in Chengdu and/or other cities needs to be revisited and the public not blindly accept it is over.

The EU scandal would not classify as a scandal in China

Sampling and inspection of incoming food commodities is now rigorously carried out. The greatest issue being the reliability of many government approved testing laboratories. A more stringent method of determining accuracy of test results and competence of the laboratory technicians is a very key requirement.

Do they have horses in China?

I've seen horse meat scandals in Canada. The problem is that we don't slaughter horses for human consumption in Canada. Horses for human consumption go to export. Horses for domestic use are pet food grade. My cats love them.

Good points Ted. They have horses, but I've mostly seen only broken-down nags used in the countryside for work or used in Inner Mongolia.

Maybe I should be more concerned with cats and dogs in the packaged food here, especially if the manufacturer is located in Guangdong. Smile
