It's always nice to see hacky sack being played here (although it may not be a sport), though I'm wondering if you know of any quirky hobbies or sports that have unexpected popularity here in China?

I was going to mention hacky sac too. Used to be quite the past time for my pals and I, now I have discovered that our hobby is shared by old Chinese woman too.

Brilliant! Or making aeroplane gestures with their arms whilst listening to said music.
Yeah swimming in the waters when it's freezing outside. They do this in Beijing and it's supposed to be really popular here.

Go to www.baidu.com enter "polar bears club" click first link and then stop clamming to be anything but Chinese. Winter swimming is done in most of 外国

My step-father do this almost all his life every january for celebration his birthday and many of his friends going too. cut the hole in the ice and have a "new year wash"

Hanging the bird cages in trees and listening to them sing.
Kung Fu stuff with the aluminium cutlasses.
Kite flying.
