McDonalds, KFC. ..I'd pretty much go anywhere that looks inviting. If you have Chinese friends let them take you somewhere they go to and if you like it go back again.
Just go and explore. Walk down the street till you see a little alley filled with people eating all kinds of tasty treats. Then sit down on one of the plastic stools and point out whatever dish someone around you is eating that looks good.
Yeah, let us know where you are in China. Each region has some special and famous dishes.
For example, Shanghai is famous for it's overuse of oil and sugar in just about everything, but there are some local specialties that you shouldn't miss.
Hot pot for sure. Great with good company and cold beer. Barbeque and Sichuan food are also my favs. The fizz of Sichuan pepper as it expldes in your mouth is unlike any other eating experience. There are also many small Muslim resturants that serve great lamb dishes like minced lamb pastry rolls that are great dipped in a mix of vinegar and chilli sauce.
I adopted the rule - if the restaurant has photos of the dishes then go in. You can see what you are ordering without worrying about the language. The more you go out the more you will know what you like and it's not expensive. BBQ lamb is divine.
