Q: Any teaching centers to avoid?

Are there any teaching centers we should avoid at all costs? For instance I've heard ABC was absolutely awful - anyone have any past experience with them?

From what I have heard, each center is individually run. There may be multiple teaching centers from the same chain in different cities, but each one will be different. One could be great, another could be horrible. You will have to find out from people working at that specific place whether it is good or not. Do you really want to work in a teaching center? They give you mostly night and weekend hours.

The best thing to do is find a few that you want to work for and google them and see what comes up. Next  thing you might try is asking for the email address of some current employees. You might be able to ask them some questions.

Also remember that just because one peron had a bad experience in 2006, doesn't necessarily suggest that it will forever be a bad place to work.

Centers/ schools in Jilin should be on top of the list. Jilin is in Changchun. According to my former colleagues, they were forced to work for more than 40hours a week without pay and it was prerogative to surrender their passports to their employer. And they get to share their 'private' apartment with 5-6 other people.

New Oriental in Chongqing has a high turnover of both foreign and domestic teachers. There are reasons for this.

Of the major language mills in China, English First has the most checkered and clouded reputation.  There are thousands of complaints about it by former teachers all over the Internet.  I can also attest to this personally.

Next, Aston and Shane are somewhere in the middle, depending upon the city and the franchise.  It's hit or miss.

If you have the profile, the looks, and wherewithall, Wall Street English is considered to be the top of the language mills in China.  Pay is high but so are expectations.  Comments about it are generally very positive.

I suggest you all get a copy of the China Black List put out by China Scam Busters by contact them at at ChinaScamBusters at gmail dot com.  It is updated every month and gives the inside scoop on all the black hats in the education business.  As a former teacher, I am still on the mailing list from 2010 and the list keeps growing!  A lot of bad apples in the teaching game for sure.  Some of the above schools mentioned are on that list.
