Soon, I will need to give a 30 minutes, demo esl lesson. It should be designed for adult students, on a food menu and a roleplay and the students cant speak chinese in the class. I am trying to think of some ideas for a short lesson.
Also, I think it would be much easier if they had some basic knowledge... I always feel awkward that they dont know much. Any ideas on a how design a basic level adult esl demo lesson and any tips or suggestions.

I really don't know why anyone is wasting their time helping you. You can't think up a role play involving food, a menu and adult students. Seriously?
Find a different profession.
Do you mean they don't have any basic knowledge or do you mean you don't know? Find that out to begin with and make your own menu with simple dishes like fried chicken heads and cockroach lung slices for sake of familiarity. The setting would be a restaurant. And you can call that a cantina, that is proper Chinese. Print or buy fake money so they can practice the numbers and burn it when done. Keep the prices under 1000 a dish, higher numbers will be confusing.
Don't expect any serious answers to your question. Report to your leader that you haven't spoilt a new account. No harm done, just learnt something.
If they are total beginners, find pictures of simple foods: glass of water, cup of coffee, sandwich, hamburger etc. Then you can teach them the object and its measure word (do we call them measure words in English?? Can't remember).
Design a menu with these words but add info: Tuna sndwich, then have them do simple role plays.
If it is only 30 mins you shouldn't get much further than this, but if you turn the whole class into the restaurant. Then they can learn phrases like 'my food still hasn't come", I didn't order this dish. blahblahblah and it goes on.
30min is a piece of cake!
most adults arent capable of remembering alot of words and phrases.
focus on some words and 3-4 sentences.
Always hard to say if you dont know their english level.
Select 2 students (advance Beginner's level) to act as:
1. waiter
2. customer
Materials:
picture or drawing of a dish with a name 2 or 3
beverages
Teach basic sentences used in ordering food (you can write them on the board and let students practice and erase when the activity will begin)
You will notice then that even you've provided simple and basic sentences the students are very nervous and will forget most of the sentences you've taught them. That's the fun part ENJOY!
