Q: Anybody else bring home some bad habits back home?

I'm home (US) for the holidays and I've caught myself:

- not tipping at the bar
- agreeing with someone with an "ungh"
- jaywalking

I think, he meant Sorrel's interrogating and verbally abusing everybody same as (his)  wifey does to a husband.

I've never been to Ozz and I've never been married, either. Got to hit Ozz one of these days.

I wouldn't call it a bad habit but one of the oddest habits I found myself doing was opening the VPN to look at websites that are freely accessible in my own country. I guess it has become such a routine thing for me to do that I now use VPN's without even thinking about it.

Scandinavian:

I actually continue to use VPN back home... making it moderately more difficult for intelligence agencies to track my online activities.

I get jumpy in queues.  Standing right behind the person in front, always looking around for potential queue jumpers and ready to fight them off at a moments notice. Everyone else is just casually lining up, so to them it must look like I'm on a crazy caffeine high, or something to that effect.

Another on is crossing the road one lane at a time. I casually stride out into the middle of the road, to wait for the traffic to clear in the other direction, only for the drivers in both directions to slam on the breaks and the entire road comes to a standstill. It's extremely embarrassing.

Basically I think these are signs I've been in China too long. Reverse culture shock is real, and causes all sorts of anxiety where I wouldn't expect it whenever I go home.

speaking mostly chinese and some english with my kids, to the annoyment of german locals and dutch relatives.

as martian, my wife adds a few habits. the tasty sichuan cuisine makes up for a lot, though.

the worst of the bad habits: referring to myself as a foreigner, and my babies as foreign-looking because they resemble me. which my wife is very happy about. we met some other half-half kids, and they look more chinese, which their moms don't seem to like.

I'm not at all concerned with food safety when I go home.

Mom, "Don't eat that roast beef, it's a little shiny."

Me, "Haha, Mom I've eaten so much street food that it's a statistical probability that I've had stray cat on a stick. Your shiny, USDA approved beef doesn't scare me."

A:I'll give my two cents on the age part. It's not as easy but can definitely be done. I was 21, fresh out of university and landed my first teaching job in china as a homeroom kindergarten teacher on a pretty standard 20,000/month salary. I'm 1 year in now and am still happy. Pretty much all international kindergarten jobs on here want 2 years experience, but many will still accept if you have experience in your home country. With that being said, being white and having a nice looking face is much more of a decision factor in china vs the west, if you can- use it to your advantage. Good luck finding something! -- brinsleym
