Q: Anybody ever worked in Europe as English teacher?

I conducted (written) interview with School in Venice, Italy, over Skype an hour ago. We couldn't hear each other, so manager (Italian) was only checking my teaching style. Q were like 'Why should we hire you?' and such. I'll get their reply in 48 hours.

What are they offering in EU to the English teacher? Does anybody know?

Is this China related Q?

'Cambridge ESOL' appears to be the blanket organisation for all English language Exams/qualifications, including IELTS and CELTA

http://www.cambridgeenglish.org/

icnif77:

I just sent them questionnaire:

2.Young students will just copy anything I say, if they like me. However, they must 'like me' first. If lesson is presented as a game, students will learn unknowingly, so younger the students, more games in classroom is necessary.

It is easier for students to learn second language, if they can see parallels with their first language. Students below 7 years, learn both languages, first and second as one language.
6. Cambridge ESOL exam is an international standard to determine student's English ability.  Levels range from below A1 (beginner) to C2 (highest ability). I used ESOL in China at IELTS and Business English to determine students English ability. Cambridge ESOL exam is open website, which I use accordingly to the student's need.

MissA:

sorrel, Cambridge proficiency exams are separate from IELTS, and are a separate system of English ranking for students. I think there are several exams students can sit, which are a more pass/fail setup than IELTS is.

The main two I'm aware of are the First Certificate (FCE), which is an Upper-Inter level proficiency exam, and then Cambridge Advanced (CAE), which, obviously, is advanced level proficiency.

Cambridge exams do often act as pathways exams for aspiring international students, the same as IELTS.

I can make this into a China related question.

I worked summer vacation last year - 6 weeks - as an ESL teacher in Europe.

It was with my home university with whom I worked jointly in China, so most of my classes were with Chinese only students.

I also had one class of students from many other countries so the difference between a mono-lingual class (all Chinese students) and a mixed class made of students from  different countries around the world was fairly obvious.

Regarding salary, which is probably a question you really want to ask, it was part of my overall contract to do this, so i can not be more helpful regarding an ESL salary in Europe

icnif77:

I found out more info yesterday about offers in W. EU. Spain and Italy offer 1000 - 1100 EUR for 20 hours/week, and free apartment, some bonus (1000 EUR) after completing of 10 months contract.

I received questionnaire form from the School in Spain. Need help with some Q, please:

1. How, in your opinion, do students best acquire a language?

2. What do you know about ESOL Cambridge exams?

I had short look yesterday at Cambridge ESOL, and I can't really say I'm familiar with it. Can somebody answer this two Qs, please?

I 'tested the waters', and sent CV to few Schools in Italy and Spain last week. I had interview with Italian stuffing agency over Skype yesterday, but in writing only, 'cause my Internet doesn't support webcam. They promised reply in 48 hours.

Today, I got questionnaire from School in Spain with video, which I can't see for some (China Internet) reason.

Do you know ESOL exams? I looked yesterday at it first time, but for the answer, I need to study it first.

ESOL Cambridge is 'thing' in EU English Schools.

Same link, I posted to the tHread 'how to teach in the classroom' for poster, who'll teach Portuguese in China. I added: 'My collection can be useful to any English FT'!

Questions (to be answered within 10 minutes)
1. Why do you want to work at Brays?
2. How, in your opinion, do students best acquire a language?

3. How important is it to know the grammar rules?
4. Which age range do you prefer working with; infants, children, teens or adults?
5. Give details of a lesson you gave which you really enjoyed.
6. What do you know about the Cambridge ESOL exams.
7. How have you used technology or internet in lessons or for student practice at home?
8. What do you think are the main qualities of a good teacher?
9. Why should Brays employ you in preference to other candidates?

I need an answer to no. 2 and 6.

Reply from Brays:

Hello icnif,

Thank you for your email.

You write: I cannot watch your video, probably because I'm not using Windows OS on my Mac

It works equally well with Mac. It might be that you are using Internet Explorer. If that’s the case try Firefox.

We have had over 40 applications so far, so I do need you to answer via videomail as it saves us a lot of time in drawing up a short list.

Best regards,

Alan Bray

40 applications? Yeah, rightEU is 'hungry' for English teachers more than China.

I can't do video call over Skype, because my Internet connection is too weak to support video call to/from EU. And China people are helping me to change Internet provider for a week already.

I'm paying for it, so I don't understand what is a hold-up!

are you looking to move to Spain for a teaching job?

icnif77:

I'm looking for possibilities to move out of China. I can't take it anymore! Endless 'screw me' possibilities got into me. Last School in Taizhou, Jiangsu, burned my valid RP, because they're not authorised to hire FT. In the same time, Jiangsu FEB won't issue WPermit to Non, so advice from FEB was 'return to EU'. My valid RP originated in Liaoning (Native English teachers Province) was extended since late 2011 in Liaoning and Xinjiang.

I spent 15 000 Rmb (or two months Xinjiang salaries) for new Z in HK. I lost another 20 000 Rmb, because I was unable to participate in IDF Summer Camp in Nanjing.

Now, I got new RP in Fujian, have new FEC, what stands for Foreign (me) Expert (me, too) Certificate.

My apartment is 40m2 (school wouldn't tell me size of the apartment at Contract sign) with 4 plastic chairs and picnic dinner table, (which collapsed already), electric (induction) one plate, 25cm in diameter cooker and small rice/dumpling cooker, fridge,TV. My bed collapsed 2nd day (no sex), and it was exchanged with new bed promptly.

On the floor above me, something's hanging over the balcony. As soon as it's a bit windy, I can hear loud banging. It's a horror during the night. Nobody can contact the owner of the apartment, and stop metal to metal banging. It's impossible to break in to the apartment above, but I looked into 'B&E' few days ago. I MUST be desperate!

Is that apartment suitable for FExpert? -----> 'Fork off!'

On the other side, I must write teaching report/plan for each class in the same Grade (LOL). I had to sign 'property discloser' or 'I can't talk about whatever (secrets) I'll learn in the School or about the school'. School will observe and evaluate my work (what I like) every month.

In other words, School wants top performance, and in return I must live with plastic chairs, and other' manure'.

It's a river city, with dirty, stinky, colored water everywhere you look. Garbage piles just by the main road through the city. However, it would be a paradise, if clean.

I'm waiting for return of my passport from PSB with new RP, then I'll decide what I'll do.

My present Contract is flexible: 'I can walk out with 30 RNotice for any reason, and repay Z cost.'

I didn't decide yet, what I'll do. 2 weeks vacation in Yunnan is next probably.

I was considering to write this post on Scan's 'Ebola' tread as 'my ebola'. Thanks for asking!

Me: 'I cook by myself, and I need furnished kitchen.'

Rep.: 'Will you get yourself an oven, like USA FT?'

Me: 'No, I'm leaving in a year. I won't purchase things, I cannot take with me. It's written in the Contract 'furnished kitchen', what means 'el. or gas cooker' and fridge.'

Apartment show was next.

I'll stay around eChina doesn't matter where I'll go. I like this Board!

I'm in Jianou, Fujian, at No.1 High (or Middle) School, only one in the city on Dasheng Rd.

We'll (probably they'll be) be 3 FT here. I met FT from USA, she's home, and will return by the end of August. 3rd FT is also from USA, currently in China on L. School's applying for his paperwork, with desire of Z HK pick-up. I spoke with rep. yesterday about it.

Contract is decent: 9000 Rmb for 18 classes a week,, full salary in winter recess, and if I'll renew Contract in June 2015, I'll get 2000 Rmb transportation cost. Utilities and Internet on my budget. Plane refund also, but I must supply the ticket.

I was thinking, high salary is because of my 5Y in China, but USA FT has the same Contract with shorter China history.

I need School's consent for part-time. Rep. asked me about part-time hourly rate, and I asked for 200 Rmb, 'cause I'm pissed with everything else.

It's small city with some 50 000 residents (I guess), it used to be Fujian capital few '000' years ago.

Ok but why the hell did you go to this 'city'? I'm in Fujian but I have to google it LOL

icnif77:

'add-it': Fuk. School changed their mind about extending Contract 2 weeks before the end of the Contract/RPermit, probably because no Gov. grants anymore. Now, I had to jump on board new sponsor fast, what is not that easy for Non. Poster from eChina (juanisaac) connected me with agent, who got me Contract with Jiangsu School. If you read my comment, you can realize I didn't have much choice after Jiangsu fiasco. I had to find new Z sponsor ASAP. I had some corny offers from eChina jobs site, but with EU Z pick-up. I even sent CV to Helen, however Helen demanded apology, before Contract show.

One night, I was able to open Dave's ESL, and sent CV to that (not Jianou) School.

My choice was 'return to EU, and apply for new Z' (I was in EU in Feb.), or get any sponsor, with hope of HK Z pick-up.

They advertise under name 'can't remember now' 'American Sino International something School' with an excellent web site. As soon as I get their name, I'll post it. Everything looks like top School, but it's an agency with similar pattern as Helen.

Contract has provision about quitting with 30-days RNotice (and refund some 3000 Rmb Z cost).

I signed, and if anything wrong, I'll walk away.

I have contact with few Unis already.

I have a wish to make few rounds with F1 (while I'm still on Earth), and if occasion surface, I would also like to fly in the space as Non-native flyby

icnif77:

If anybody else care for the job in Italy, (YOU) can PM me. I hope you understand, I couldn't resist to hold this excellent offer to myself!

They like Native English Teachers (mostly) (at my School..LOL), 'manager told me': 'Hold your Native English passports!'

However, because of the lenghty 'WP and RP process in EU', offer doesn't apply ('manager told me!') to FTs holding passports from:

1. USA (Bill and Engl.)

2. Canada (Sino) 'add-it': and Ted. I know some positions in Germany and Holland/Amsterdam (RLight district, only! 'Thz germans')

3. Australia (Phil and T.). (T. maybe, if he can supply clean M. (head) Exam)

4. New Zealand.

'Manager told me', FTs from the above listed countries have too heavy accent. I knew, Italians know English!O2, o2

'Nosa Costra' and hand rolled pizza with sunny side egg on the top next….

This info is out of my email records. I still can't open Dave's ESL Cafe.

so u moving to Italy?

icnif77:

I'm not sure, yet! Here banging don't stop. They showed me another apartment last week, but that's it.

On Tue., I expect return of my book with new RPermit.

I have slight problem: 'banging in the apartment' is cause for quitting immediately, without giving 30 days RN, and paying Z cost. I have Fujian FEB phone no. on hand, buTT:

'if I quit imm. I must move out of the apartment, and for now I don't have place to go, so I must cool it down, and do it when I'll have place to move in (or out of China)'.

EU looks promising, however I didn't sign Contract, yet. School asked me, when I can be in Italy, and I told them I need two weeks the longest to move out of China.

I have another interview tomorrow at 1am. We'll try with video again, however my Internet is the same, 'cause Chinaman doesn't move.

Did you look at the Kunshan web link? Would you sign Contract with School, if you would only see that web link?

Update on my 'apartment banging thingy':

Rep. showed me another apartment last week, which is furnished a bit worst than present one, but I didn't mind if no noise.

Rep. said: 'I'll come tomorrow, and help you to move in the upper floor apartment!'

Me: 'Can you please install broadband first, and then I'll move. I can't be without Internet!'

I paid 500 Rmb (200 Rmb deposit) for yearly subscription, but it took more than 2 weeks after I paid to have connection in the apartment.

Rep.: 'You must pay 50 Rmb transfer fee!'

Me: 'I have to pay? No, you (School) have to pay transfer fee. I didn't do nothing wrong in present apartment! (me being 'anal' a bit!).

Rep.: 'OK!'

Rep. is very nice guy, who must tell Principal everything connected with FTs. He must get head's permission, before he transfer matters to me.

Rep. came to my apartment last night, and gave me 'Dismissal letter'. I have 30 days to find new RP sponsor.By Contract, either party can quit Contract for any reason with 30-days notice. However, I must refund 3000 Rmb Z visa cost.

'I see it in my future' call to SAFEA, especially because of 3000 Rmb Z refund.

icnif77:

Rep. came to the apartment for FEC. He'll cancel it tomorrow.

Dismissal letter was issued yesterday, so by Contract, I must vacate apartment by September 19th.

Rep. asked me to move out ASAP. He wants to head to PSB tomorrow, and cancel RP with issue 30 days L.

They don't understand 30-days notice.

Call to SAFEA tomorrow is a must. I hope, somebody speaks English. there.

Anyway...The European jobs don't seem to pay much...all around a 1000 euro a month, right?

icnif77:

Yeah, around 1000 Eur and free apartment for less than 20 classes/week. Bonus of 1000 Eur in the end of 10 months Contract.

My Italian School is sham! I found FT Board (I believe on the same link I posted as reply to sorrel), where some 10 teachers were asking about Italian guy, who conducted interview over Skype, but no voice. Just chat. All teachers were 'hired' some two weeks before me.

He never replied (with the Contract) to me anyway.

As soon as I sort out this thing here, I'll try Spanish Schools.

'add-it': if you 'Yahoo-gle' name of the Italian School I posted above, you'll find Board with FTs complaining about 'being hired without talking to the guy'.

I was 3rd ft at jian ou, and icinf is telling truth. Jian ou, the city and how the school is run has been worst experience in china. Filthy and corrupt, the city. School mismanaged, regularly change schedules without any significant notice. Housing is terrible adjacent to outside vegetable and poultry market, awakenened everyday at 3 am. No decent food available, sanitation is non existent. The salary is reasonable due to sole fact, school unable to attract and retain ft. Likely there will only be one for second term, and it is not me.
