looking into a 2nd phone. hate ios, and becoming bored with android. android is awesome, but severely limited for use within mainland china. is windows phone 8 similarly restricted in terms of app availability? particularly paid apps. anybody here using windows phone 8? would u recommend it?

I have a Nokia Lumia 720 as a second phone. I really use it as a mini tablet in wifi areas.
Windows 8 is very slick. I bought it because I wanted Nokia maps and the Nokia radio app. I use the radio to stream music at bars I drink at.
But be warned, you can only use a Nokia account password once on a Nokia phone if you want this feature. Only one Nokia Radio is allowed per account, and once you put your account password in your phone is locked to that account. So, don't buy second hand, and if you buy new create a new Nokia account.
Bing translate could be good, but it translates English into Chinese Characters so for day to day use it's useless.
It's just one of those things. The perfect phone would have features from all the systems, but the patent people have destroyed it all with stupid expensive court cases.
I think Windows 8 is a good backup phone, because it works in China. Foreign Android phones get blocked from time to time here, but I still use my cheap HK Galaxy Ace as my number one.
Also, never buy an Android in China. You can't sync it. My windows 8 phone is a Chinese market model, but every account loaded no problem at all.
My advice would be, try it. The Nokia 720 costs about 1150 RMB. It's a fantastic phone for the money.
But for everyday use, I use my 800 RMB galaxy ace.

Yeah galaxy ace is still a great phone. Had mine for almost 3 yrs, it was just relegated to a backup role recently. I love how the lower specs give me 3 days of usable battery life, and that's listening to podcasts and using the internet on the train.
If you're having problems syncing, I recommend setting up your VPN for your phone. Download the app OpenVPN and just copy all the config files from your computer over to that, then you can connect on your phone and have full access to google play and youtube etc.
It's pretty easy, definitely recommend doing it.
What do you mean by saying that you can't sync Android in China? I've been using my Lenovo P780 for a while, and it works perfectly fine - gmail, Evernote etc. Had to change the software, though. It's not as complicated as it seems.

Erm.......scratching my head here...
So your Chindroid phone could not sync as bought? So you had to hack it to get it to work.
So you actually agree with my answer?

I mean, I spent like 15 min installing new software and now I have fully functional cell phone without having to resort to change platform.
I offer help to anyone who wants to erase all that pre-loaded Chinese crap from their Android handy.
i bought a Nokia 1520 for the wife. stunning screen, perfect camera, great phone.
Buy an Android phone from this seller in Singapore. This is where I bought mine. Quick delivery and very cheap.

It has googleplay and you can sync it while in China. Windows 8 is a better platform but needs more useful everyday apps.
