Q: Anyone been accused of stealing?

Older teacher found an iPad in the FamilyMart near the school and waited around for about an hour and no one came to claim it. So he took it home and found the owners on QQ. He wanted to meet up with them to return it but they called the cops. The boss and all the Chinese teachers call him on his phone and complain about making trouble.

Trying to be a good guy almost got him arrested. Anyone have similar experiences?

Not me, but a female friend who I saw at one of the local Walmart was.  I found her inside the store, and joined forces for shopping while talking.  Making a long one short, she went over the cosmetics and picked up some items from the shelves.  From there she accompanied me to the meat area, where  i wanted some boneless chicken breasts and she offered to translate.  during our wait for the chicken, she decided that whatever cosmetics she had picked up were too expensive at Walmart, and could be bought cheaper elsewhere, and pick them out of the shopping card and left them on a counter.  After checking out, as we left the store, she was stopped and accused of stealing the cosmetics.  She agree to be searched and of course, they were not found on her or her purse.  I kept on telling her to tell them were she had left them, but she told me no, let them dig their own grave.

The outcome is that she is taking them to Court on the basis of a false shoplifting charge and quite an embarrassment at the exit of Walmart.

I am surprised that the Chinese would have such a word as "stealing" in their dictionary since any and all misdeeds are always labeled as "misunderstandings".

P.S. BTW... I read last month that over 20,000 bicycles are stolen everyday in China - my guess is for scrap metal.
