Q: Anyone been to Dandong?

Is there anything to do than to stare at North Korea? I kind of want to go stare, but possibly if there is no other reasons for going I would not.

I heard there are official tourist boats that will sail close to the border, but that there are some private boat owners that will sail you all the way across so you can by North Korean products from entrepreneurial fishermen

THE PORT OF DANDONG - what an inspiring advert.

Scandinavian:

sometimes CCTV News has breaks between the Port of Dandong adverts to show some, quite likely made up, news

Dandong is kind of lovely and pleasant, compared to the sensory violence of a city like Shenyang. And the landscape surrounding it makes even the bus-trip worthwhile, no matter the season.

There's the Museum to Commemorate American Aggression about the Korean war 1950-53 and there's a stretch of Great Wall next to Yalu River north of the city (Tiger Mountain Great Wall, 虎山长城).

The funny thing about staring at N-Korea is the desolation over there. Especially at night, when the Chinese riverside is bathing in neon, it looks like nothing but Mordor on the other side. I happened to be in Dandong on the night of the lunar eclipse last autumn and felt like even the moon wouldn't shine over North-Korea.

There's plenty of Korean food and stuff to enjoy in Dandong. Beware of those boat-trips though. They promise you '12 places of interest' for 250 kuai and you end up in a speedboat getting soaked and dropped off somewhere after 20 minutes where there's no transportation back into town.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
