I'm scared of the dentist at the best of time, but the idea of going to one in China is terrifying. But it seems I have to go - damn wisdom teeth. Anything I should be prepared for? Also tales of nice experiences would be preferred, rather than horror stories.
I've been to the local dentist when I was in Shunde, Foshan. Don't expect that same service and hygiene you get back home. Best bet is to go to HK. Wisdom teeth you say? God! Only a hospital can save you from the pain. Give the local dentist a miss at all costs!
Root canal and crown in Qingdao. First class treatment in a very clean and professional environment.
Tooth ache problem in Xinjiang in a filthy place where the dentist tried to put dirty instruments into my mouth with dirty, ungloved hands while at the same time talking on her phone. I walked. Ran, actually.

Can't remember the name but it was on Fuzhou Lu, 3 or 4 shops south east from the corner of Minjiang Lu. I think it was a 5 letter name that began with H. And the sign could've been green. You walk in from the street to a spotless and modern reception, complete with ubiquitous fish tank, where the lady spoke serviceable English. The dental rooms were upstairs and again, modern and clean. And private.
Five separate root canal treatments and crown fitting cost Y2500. About 15% of what it would've cost in Australia.
I presume you don't want to know about the stinking place that I ran away from.
I suggest Beijing, Shanghai or HK. If you are not in a 1st tier city don't bother. Ouch!!
I went to the dentist last week to have 2 fillings done and also some cleaning (in Guangzhou). It wasn't bad at all. The hospital was clean, the tools they used seemed clean (every time another patient came in, the nurse took out another sealed pack of tools) , and the doctor and nurse were nice.
The dentist also said that if I had time, I should also get my 2 wisdom teeth taken care of. I wanted to do that the same day, but apparently a woman shouldn't get any teeth pulled on when she's having her period... So, will probably go another time.
I have no fear of the Dentist in Mudanjaing . I made the trip from Australia to there in 2012 primely to go get a route cannel and crown as it was cheaper even with the travel than getting it done in AUS also less painful even without anesthetic . I will go again this year for a check up and to get a broken tooth fixed . (Norman Bethune Hospital in Mudanjaing , Dr Son ) the only down side is you have a audience of next patients but She will kick them out while it is your turn if you want ( I never cared less)
I was in fear for dentist for my entire life since my first grade primary school. The school dentist was sadist in our small eyes. but the fear lasted. when I grew up, I did not visit dentist for long years, and you know what happen than with your teeth. When I was in real need to do something, I have find on dentist near to my ex-office, get name card and 2 days later my wife called and made appointment. I smoked a bit of shit before I went in, still in fear, but ready to do anything it takes to save my teeth and life
she was very professional, told me what she can repair, what can be saved, what can not be saved and what she can do with it. let me choose of crowns, which was priced from 200 to 4800rmb per pieces and explained what is the difference. Since that first day I went there to relax in a chair while she done her great job. Including the wisdom teeth pull-out. I have spend there about 30.000rmb and I happy. Now I was there with my son twice, cleaning and filling his milk teeth damage from choclate and other sweets. First time, he was afraid and cried a bit, but on second visit, he always laughed instead of crying. Great boy.

I have a friend who had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled at a hospital here. I didn't see the actual clinic, but my friend recovered well after the dentist visit.
There are some things they cannot do but I would feel the same if I was in Los Angeles. The equipment often seems a little 1980ies.
Despite Hong Kong/Macau being in close proximity, I get the impression most expats here opt to go to Bangkok for dental care. I've only had one encounter with the Hong Kong/Macau health care, it was a lot more expensive, but also gave a much more comfortable feeling. I often feel that Chinese health care professionals seem confused and gives the impression that you are ruining their playing on the phone time, whereas the one encounter in Macau was a very pleasant, relaxed experience (except the receptionist called me "Sir"
I heard they only give anesthesia for extractions. A simple filling will be done without.
The dentist I went to in Nanning was the most modern, cleanest, I have ever been to.That includes the US, UK, Canada.
Just been today in fact, I have been multiple times the past two months and I've had a better experience here than in my country, and I'm in a tiny city. I had two wisdom teeth removed and have had a brace made, it's 10 times cheaper than back home and I actually found the dentist more friendly and more professional here because we are foreigners. The wisdom teeth were a breeze btw, they injected the gum, extracted the teeth quickly and efficiently, i rested for 30 minutes after and looked after the wound for the next week or so and they're fine and dandy.
Also didn't have an ounce of pain with the wisdom teeth, they gave me pain killers and i never took them. I'll save them for a rainy day.
Went a few months ago when I chipped a tooth when I ate a date (forgot about the pit). The guy who helps out the foreign teachers at work took me to a hospital that's attached to a university. The place was perfectly modern and clean and I had three dentists attending to me and my tooth fixed up in an hour. Was a little sensitive for a week or two but now I can't even remember which one got damaged.
Best part was the price. Total of Y107. They wouldn't even let you sit in the fancy chair for that money in Australia!

tell me about it the dentist in Australia wanted $2000 the one in China cost me less than $100
I went to one because of a toothache. With the help of a translator, I got an x-ray and some antibiotics (fortunately it was nothing serious). The only thing that I had to get used to was that everyone else who was waiting decided it was ok to stand next to the dentist and also look into my mouth during the examination.
