Q: Anyone been victim to this supermarket scam trick?
Was at the supermarket the other day buying loads of stuff. I get to the counter, real busy, lots of people behind me, I pay, get home and notice while I'm taking my stuff out there's two or three items I hadn't originally placed in there. They were small, and ended up totaling over 100 RMB. Someone had literally waited till I'd taken a few steps from my trolley to get something and then dumped these products in.
I had to go back to the supermarket, and at first they told me they couldn't do anything, that I'd bought the stuff...then when I bitched some more, they said they'd look at the cameras. So one woman just went off, and didn't come back for 40 minutes. Clearly they thought I was just going to give up and leave. I didn't. Finally she came back and said they couldn't see anything, that there was nothing to be done. I yelled some more, and finally, either giving in or wanting to get me off their back, they allowed me to buy other stuff for the amount of the products I didn't want.
Now, I'm stupid. I should have paid more attention, but do supermarkets seriously hire people to go around scamming customers like this? Honestly...that's just low.
What city do you live in, maybe it's specific to your area.
I do not usually pay much attention to the basket while around the supermarket, but when I do reach the check out, I do move everything from the basket to the counter, and if I find anything I did not place into the basket, I just move it aside, and no one makes any fuss about it. But I never seen anyone throwing merchandise into shopper's carts, and I am pretty good observant, I have fun catching others stealing things here in China.

Today I came across something kind of similar. I ordered some fried noodles, and the lady proposed to add an egg for 2 yuan. I said no, then she started making the noodles. Once the was done, she handed me the stuff, and the price was 2 yuan higher than written on the wall. So I looked in the box, and there it was, an egg, lying like a cocky douche on top of my noodles. I told her "I didn't ask for the egg". She said sorry (well, no, she didn't, because China), I thought you wanted it. I said no, I didn't ask for an egg, but she kept on saying "I already made it, give 2 extra yuans for the egg". I bitched a bit about how it was her mistake, and I didn't want that fucking egomaniac egg. She finally took it back because she seemed to realize that, perhaps, I did NOT want an egg, and I hate fried eggs.
It's not even about the money, but about the principle. And fried eggs, which I hate.
WHEN THEY DO THAT BE I JUST WALK AWAY AND DONT PAY AND GO ELSE WHERE AND NEVER GO BACK
I've heard of this scam before, but never had it happen.
i will check my purchase list before i leave the supermarket, if something wrong i will ask the market's staff to resolve this problem immediately. but if you went back home and found the this mistake, the supermarket will excuse that is you fault. and they are dislike waste time to help consumer figure out this problem. which most mistakes made by supermarket staffs.
When ever i use the Chinese debit card at any supermarket, there's a lost of up to 28yuan. has anyone observe this too?

No. You should sign up for the mobile phone text messaging service with your bank. After any transaction (deposit, ATM withdrawal, debit purchase), they'll send a text message to your mobile phone telling you the amount of the deposit/withdrawal and the resulting available balance in your account. That way if there's any discrepancy, you can dispute it on the spot.
This service costs me 3 rmb/month. Worth it I think.
This is the first time I've heard about this scam... Thanks for the heads up. I also put all my things one by one on the counter, so if someone does try to put anything I don't want in my cart, I'll notice it.
Let me tell you one thing, It is the cashier who puts those kinds of stuff in your shopping bag. Usually they have many items that other people brought to the counter then ended up not buying them. They are so reluctant to put them back to the shelf, so they take advantage of you when you are packing your stuff into the shopping bag and sell random weird stuff to you! The other day a friend of mine had the same problem, he came back home from the supermarket to find out he had one extra item in his bag that he didn't even know what it was! When he checked his receipt he found out that its price was about 50 yuan!
The moral of the story is you better be careful when at the check out, because if they put such things in your cart while still shopping you will probably find them out when unloading your cart, so the better option is that the cashier sells them to you secretly when you are busy packing your stuff up!
never happened to me......but if it happens actually to say the truth i will only be angry depending on what kind of things dropped to my trolley.if snacks or beer.that would be fine.if some shit that i don't like then i will be off the roof and steaming angry................LOL
That happened to me a Chao Shi Fa last week actually. I paid for 120 yuan of stuff I never put in my basket. Now I watch carefully as they scan each and every item.
Old thread but this happened to me at a restaurant once. Ordered some barbecue and beer with friends and they brought us a small plate of peanuts and a small plate of sliced cucumber. No one ordered it so we figured they just brought some free side munchies. When the bill comes we are billed 18 kuai for each plate. I threw a fuss and ended up not having to pay for it. Funny thing is, the English speaking waitress disappeared during the argument and luckily I can read the characters for peanuts and cucumbers to see that we were getting ripped off.
This also sort of happened to me and a friend at a restaurant. We each ordered some things with the waitress to share between us. They ended up giving us a dish that neither of us ordered, except each of us thought the other person ordered it so we ate it. Luckily the restaurant let us go without paying for that dish even though we ate it because they made us pay for everything up front and that extra dish wasn't on the receipt. Seems like a staff tried to pull a fast one without knowing we paid for everything up front first.
the bottom line, if while in a restaurant you point at an item on the menu and you ask 'what is this'...its goes on the order form.
all and all the chinese people dont want to lose face so restaurant often give customers food they didnt order because they wont say anthing... ive had this happen and chinese friends get mad if i insist on saying something....
chinese have been taken advantage of for centuries......there you have it!

I must have different friends to you then. What I'd noticed with meals in restaurants is that Chinese friends will study the bill & even add up the total themselves to make sure it is right. Any errors & they point it out to the waitress. Maybe this is because restaurants are known to try to scam people on bills?
