Q: Anyone bought a home 3D projector?

I'm considering buying one, and at the moment, it's looking like the BenQ 517 (cos it's the cheapest).

But any other suggestions would be appreciated!

Any local brands worth putting money into? (I'm not hopeful, but I've seen some things on Taobao...)

I watched a movie at a friend's house the other day on a projector and it was amazing! I really want one now. She said hers cost 1000 rmb on taobao including the screen. I don't think hers was 3D though.

Thanks, but only looking for a 3D one!

I would never buy a local Chinese brand.  Not when Korean and Japanese brands are so inexpensive.  I recommend companies like BenQ and Sony (stay away from Sanyo), JVC and Panasonic.  I had a Hitachi that was pretty good too.  BenQ is the king of budget projectors, IMO.

I bought a BENQ about 6 weeks ago. Looked at 3D but couldn't justify the expense as I wasn't sure of just how much 3D was available and was it really worth it.

I originally bought one from Taobao and sent it back the next day as it was cheap and nasty. Then went shopping locally. 2500RMB was the final price (advertised for 8000RMB. Why do they put such ridiculous prices on an item that you eventually buy for 1/4 the cost!) and this one is pretty good. I can watch anything on it in broad daylight with even sunlight on the screen. Heaps of jack points at the back for monitors, audio, speakers, USB, etc etc.

Shining_brow:

What was the brand, model, and where you bought it?

Did you go alone, or with a Chinese person? (I'd get a local to go in first to find something appropriate, then me to confirm what they found... I"m sure there'd be 2 (quite) different prices quoted!)

I tried looking for the model number - all I can see is DLP on the top. I went alone and looked at the displayed models. I was armed with prices of various models I looked at online so I had an idea of the price range. I showed interest in 2 models, neither of them Chinese made. I simply said "too expensive" in Chinese and they asked me how much I wanted to pay. Nice comeback. I said 2000RMB, he said 3000RMB I said no, he said 2500RMB, so I got him to set it up, did a small lesson on how to work it all and paid and left. The price was very comparative to online and I was keen on buying locally so if anything went wrong I could take it back for repair or whatever. It didn't come with a case, annoying, but next door was a bag seller and for 120RMB I picked up a pretty good carrying case.

Here's some numbers on the back: MSSI7F; Q/SIQB 25

I took the box it came in to school. I'll check that tomorrow ok? Dunno what I did with the manual and the paperwork. Sorry.

I'm guessing you bought the BenQ MS 517F which I was also looking at (unless you've been duped into buying a Chinese knock-off, and they've dodgey'ed the numbers). Price is about the same online (ie, 2000-2500).

What I'm not looking at is the 800*600, instead of at least 720, if not native 1080p. (granted, it's about 3 times the price :p)

Also, if you're interested: http://www.projectorcentral.com/BenQ-MS517.htm

Thanks!

Btw, what city/province are you in??? (it's amazing what some cities have, that others don't!!)

Hmmm...won't let me add a comment. My BenQ doesn't have 3D. So never tried it.  surprise

I'm in Heilongjiang Province and as per the name I'm in Daqing. There is an awesome computer type place here - 4 floors of anything and everything. The projector place looked like it had not sold anything for ages so maybe they were happy to deal on anything.

Shining_brow:

Ok, looks like you didn't buy that BenQ MS517 I thought you did......
