I don't know, all smartphones are overall same-same to me, with various levels of finish quality. Same hardware overall, user interface about the same. If your self-worth depends on a phone made by wage slaves, that's not right.

I'm about to buy a FairPhone for my wife, where

* the factory workers work under better conditions and are better pay

* some care in the sourcing of the components, to avoid funding some guerilla in Africa

* open and documented software stack

* good customer support

I got the RepRap by the way. Awesome machine though I struggled a bit. Printing own designs right now!

I'm not in a hurry anyway, I didn't think smartphones are very interesting devices because of a lack of ethical and open machines available. So I'm happy to know they're popping out, but I won't go crazy about it.

How do you get all that cool tech info?

I read Slashdot, I follow a couple of geeky blogs, and my Facebook contacts which includes an international of tech. nerds and a few solar-powered vegetarian tree huggers riding fair bikes. I was ranting that few entrepreneurs have the guts to sell simple, durable products caring about consequences, even if it's more expensive... And then a guy mentioned FairPhone :)

Almost:

I agree with Dr. M.  All the smart phones are now more or less at the peak of their development and they all make great phone calls and run apps. - and after all isn't that why we bought them?  Maybe the Chinese will buy them just for the prestige value, but not this laowai.

I couldn't give a rat's arse about these stupid things. I just use a cheap phone. When I lived in NZ I once turned off my phone for 4 months. It was heaven! I could read novels, magazines and science books on the train without being interrupted by "wat u up 2 lol?"

I always lived by the saying, "control the machine, just don't let the machine control you."

my stance on iphones has changed from apathy to antipathy because of chinese iphone users. but apple was smart to market it to them rather than to me. bigger target demographic.

My Nokia (no number) in red is blast, too! I purchased it in HK for HK$ 190 (150 Rmb).

Students told me today, I could buy the same phone in China for 20 Rmb. I argued, I bought my red brick 2 years ago. Ha!

They all carry Iphones, and one student commented, only 'losers' in China have same/similar phoneas mine.

OK! I have to lose sometimes.

Add me in into the rat's ass non-givers. I use a Lumia 925 because I've been given it as company mobile and for me it works fine for emails and pictures. For private use, I'm happy with my little tank Nokia 6020. 5+ years of use and abuse and it works like day 1.

About a billion Chinese care about the Iphone - no most of them don't know anything about phones or know how to make good use of them but having one is a trendy and fashionable status symbol and is therefore a hot commodity. Most of the people going crazy about the Iphoen wouldn't know quality if it smacked them in the face.

As for me, I couldn't care less about the Iphone. I don't really see the appeal of spending all the extra money when my current HTC gives me everything I need plus a sleek design.

If your old phone is on its way out and you're in the market for a new phone, you did your research and decided the new iphone was what you wanted I understand that, even though I wouldn't buy one myself. You wait until it comes out and buy it.

What I don't get is the people who just have to be the first to have the new model, even though their current phone (iphone5 probably) is still working great and will for another few years. They spend a few days camping out in front of the local apple store and hopefully are close enough to the start of the line that they get to buy one that day so they can..... show it off ! That's what it's all about, showing off. I really doubt that the new model makes wechat, QQ, selfie pictures or angry birds (and that's really all they'll do with it) work any better than the previous models but suddenly if you only have the 2nd newest version you can't use your phone in public for fear someone will see it.

It just seems pathetic and sad to me.

I will join the seemingly growing crowd of people not giving a rat's ass about iPhones. Having been using various older models of Nokia for years, I agree with laowaigentleman about not letting the machine control me. I also don't like to be cluttered with too many useless apps.

I have already been inundated with inquiries and requests about bringing iPhone6's to China.  When am I going home next?  When will you be back?  How much for the 6, 6+?  Oh, you think it will be sold out....how much for a 5S?  These are people I rarely converse with, but now I'm suddenly their path to massive face gains.

God.  My Chinese gf is telling me about some friends of hers who are planning to buy the iPhone6's in HK or Australia or somewhere, and then come back and resell them here for upwards of 10000 rmb, maybe even 14000 rmb.  So naturally, she thinks I should also stock up when I go home.  Because wouldn't it be awesome to get a suitcase stuffed full of 750usd iPhone's confiscated by customs!

I read before that factory workers had a difficult time assembling iPhone 5,they were taking too long. iPhones are expensive, when will they quit paying slave wages to make them?

Samsung Galaxy S5 is a better phone, I'd expect iPhone 6 would have come out being THE best for awhile, but it's not. Samsung has more memory and bigger battery and processor, bla bla bla.

It wouldn't be the first time they go nuts over a new iPhone.

It's just an extra line of icons on the menu, with a little more processing power, which will go to waste, since most iPhone users (casuals) only use wechat, instagram or whatever, and at most play games like Candy Crush, which require little processing power.

Gamers who want to play actual games will just do it on another platform, instead of wasting their battery to play on a tiny screen with unbearable controls.

In other words, it's a waste of money for everyone. There was a time when the iPhone was nice because it had something interesting to bring to the world of phones - or at least it felt new. Now the creative process is just "toss some new chips in here, slap a bit of screen there, and make ads with white backgrounds. Keep that formula on the board for next year."

xinyuren:

apparently you haven't seen some of the better games for iPhone.  Impressive for a phone.  And iPhones processor, along with it's GPU has been one of the most powerful.  I'm not an iFan, but don't spread misinformation.

Mr_spoon:

If you'd read carefully, you wouldn't have missed my point.

I have tried a ton of games for iPhones, most of which were overhyped mediocre rehashes of old flash games, while some were actually really good, and had impressive content.

But the point is, most people do not play those impressive games. Or if they do, they play it for a few minutes, then forget it and go back to whatever app is trendy and easy to the brain and eyes (Candy Crush, Clash of Clans, etc). A touch screen offers limited gameplay possibilities compared to a controller or keyboard, so no matter how powerful your phone is, there is only so much it can offer. If you add to that the fact that the vast majority of iPhone users is ultra casual, that processing power is going to waste.

At no point did I deny the phone's processing power, no need to get your iPanties in a bunch.

Doesn't get me hot and bothered. I have absolutely no interest in iPhones, iPads, iPods  or anything else Apple i. Can't really understand some people mentality getting hot, bothered and flustered over a phone, must be an ego thing. I read yesterday that some guy traveled from Taiwan to Hong Kong and queued for a few days just to get the paws on the thing. Asked why? he replied  'because it's unique' obviously he does understand the term 'unique' only a few million will be sold, very unique. Or unique for a few months until the next model hits the streets. Yesterday in HK, 3 Chinese national who traveled and queued together from the mainland, ended up brawling in the street as to who should be first. Crazy world, crazy people.

I had a student today tell me that people in China are saying that in foreign countries on,y Chinese people can afford to buy the iPhone 6. I nearly spit out my coffee I was laughing so hard. I then informed that Chinese people have to go to Apple stores to buy because they don't live there and have no phone plans. I gave the example of Verizon in the US giving a free iPhone 6 with a cell phone plan of $99 a month. Then went on to say there are deals that Chinese people can't take advantage of in any country they are buying them plus moist people don't care about buying one.

Has anyone noticed that lots of English testing in China features articles which praise Steve Jobs and Apple? I'm not implying that this is sinister propaganda, but because all these people seem to do is be herded into a classroom for 12 hours a day, they're practically a captive audience for the worst kind of marketing hacks China has to offer.

Why can't they buy a competitor's phone? Generally they have all of the features of Apple phones for up to a quarter of the price.

Your student reminds me of news from North Korea which said that they have the world's second highest living standard, second only to China.

Here's why I don't buy apple:
