Q: Is anyone currently teaching a specific subject in China with a MA in the same subject?
I am trying to compare teaching jobs between America and China. I have a Chinese friend who has a MA from an American university to teach Chinese to foreign students, she has been kind enough to tell me about her compensation package and work load while teaching Chinese at an American University. What I am looking for, is preferably a person teaching English at a Chinese university with a MA in English to make the comparison as accurate as possible, but I will happily look at what a Math, Chemistry, or Physics or History teacher with a MA in their respective field earn. I have been researching adds, but what is offered and the eventual package can be miles apart. I would appreciate as much info as possible; salary, work load, class size etc. TIA

Master of Applied Linguistics - teaching English to university level students (well, I was.. currently teaching to a Pre-Master's Program, and A-Levels English).
Not that it really helps, but I'm also currently doing a Master's in Education (TESOL). ... might get it finished next year.. yay!

I started in Bumfuck, JX, with only a BA and dodgey TESOL cert, and was on 5000 (plus unlimited return airfare - really shoulda abused that! :p)
When I first got my masters, I picked up a job that netted 12500, and some sort of airfares (8000??)
then, after that, I scored a job basically working for NCUK/Kaplan, where the minimum qualification was masters - which netted 18K (no airfares etc).
I live in a T1-2 city.
MS Applied Physics / MS Pure Mathematics
I'm currently between contracts, so I can only discuss my last job which was teaching in an international high school. I also currently teach during my free time at an SAT prep training school. The international school gave me 16 classes per week and the SAT prep school gives 10 classes per week.
At the SAT prep school I get 300-400 yuan per hour depending on the class. And the high school was almost 20k per month. I think a person willing to spend 40-45 hours a week for teaching (including preparing lesson materials) can easily bring in 30-40k+ in China. That also depends on whom you work for and how you sell your skills. Chinese will almost always low-ball you if you're not aware of market rates (I know that because I taught maths for half a year for 150 yuan / class).
And, life in China itself is rather inexpensive (IMO). I have a close friend who earns more than me and can never save any money. I can give you a cost breakdown (In Chinese currency) for my own living expenses as an example: Serviced apartment 5000 (rent&utilities), food is 2500, entertainment 2500, transportation 500. So depending on your lifestyle you could bank at least 4-6k USD every month or spend it all like my friend. Hope my advice helps!
