Q: Anyone else go to the jobs fair?
I went to the Jobs Fair advertised on this website today in Shanghai and I have to say it was crap. Nothing like what I expected. First of all the majority of the positions were for companies or schools not in Shanghai which wasn't made clear, secondly most of the jobs (about 90%) were English teaching jobs. Ok I know a lot of the foreigners here teach English but you can't tell me theres no other jobs available. Waste of my day!! And full of people selling crap.
Anyone go to the other fairs, or have any better luck?

My luck has not been better. Often times, they post the job fair just one day before the fair is to take place, so usually I miss them.
I went to a job fair with my previous school, we were looking for new teachers so I was with the employers. It was in the Nanning Convention / Exhibition centre (which is fairly huge), and there were literally tens of thousands of 'customers'. My role was to evaluate the English level of the 'candidates'. Of the several hundred candidates who came forward that day, I rated three highly enough to recommend further interviews. The Director of Studies said no to all three "because they're not beautiful". They had degrees in English, IELTS level 8, and they knew how to teach the language and had a good grasp of idiomatic expressions, but they weren't even offered an interview because they weren't beautiful!

I am so sorry to hear that,Its no good that Chinese people like to judge people according to their looks.I HATE IT.As a Chinese,I am ashamed of it.
Actually,It happened to one of my best friend too,she's not pretty and very small, but she can speak Fluent English. almost all companies just said NO to her. because of her looks,people think she can not handle the job about dealing with foreign customers which is really annoying.
