Q: Anyone else think it's hard to find pretty, paper lanterns in shops here?

Before coming to China, I was under the impression that just about any shop sells paper lanterns because it seems like such a Chinese thing. However, besides those tacky red and gold plastic new year's lanterns, I've only seen paper ones in IKEA. What's that about!?

wait until lantern festival comes, 15 days after New Lunar Year Day, most stores should carry some.  Paper lanterns are not used within cities no more as a normal way of life, thus not readily available in city stores unless festivities are close.

The stores are currently full of wonderful little paper lanterns of many differen types and varieties (January 2012).  There are several traditional Chinese festival that center around the usage of lanterns and during those periods it is also possible to find lanterns in the shops, etc.
