Q: Anyone encountered any racist dogs in China?

I have. The other day I was walking down the street and a stray dog, who had just walked by crowds of locals without notice, saw me (or perhaps smelled me?) and started barking like all hell and going into attack mode. I did what always seems to work with stray dogs: assumed a defense posture, like making out with the leg of a 15-foot bozo doll, and imagined fireballs blasting from my eyes into the dog, while slowly, menacingly moving toward the barking dog. The dog seemed to get the point and whimpered, but I couldn't help but feel I'd been targeted due to my race.

Anyone else had similar experience with racist dogs here?

Too be honest, every experience i have had with strays have been the opposite. They hated the Chinese and loved the foreigners. Maybe not loved, but at least knew I wasnt going to kick it, maim it or eat it. So tolerated my presence.

Lord_hanson:

I agree with Mike. They can sense foreigners are more relaxed around dogs. A lot of Chinese are scared dogs and can sense this. On a side note. One of my friends had a racist dog. It would bark at anyone who was not white. I also once had a dog who barked at people in wheel chairs but I suspect the dog was scared of the chair.

I pet big stray, orange and grey male cat in Anshan, close to my GF's apartment complex.

All Chinese passers-by look at me and cat on his back with 'big wondering eyes'.

In Fuk. I was passing daily by two dogs on the leash, behind the wall. They always bark, but with different sound. Howl more than bark. I made them quiet once with owner present. I was standing in the entrance, and dogs were just calling me to come closer. If I would be with Chinese translator, I would ask owner to release both dogs off the leash.

I don't really get it, what's 'racist dog'. Dog can be trained to do many unusual things, i.e. attacking or barking only at black person. Police dogs aren't trained to 'not attack uniform'. Police dog will go after the policeman, if handler signs 'attack'.

One thing I have found is that dogs here are less outgoing and friendly than those in other places I've been, it's harder to approach them.

@iron: 'just eat something'. Chinese made me ate dog meat in Jixian, Hebei. It tastes similar to beef or venison meat.

It's true. I start trying to call dogs and cats over and they look at me like...

"What the hell, are you going to beat me and eat me too?"

If I can coax them, they are so happy like they discovered Nirvana. Then from there on out, they like me more than their owners... if they have one. If not, they just follow me around yelping or meowing.

You sure you not misread the dog? All the wild dogs seems pretty docile as long as they are just walking about. I am a little on edge when I have my own dog with me, but when I just meet them myself, no problemo. The only reason to stay away from them is the fleas I assume they carry.

Scandinavian:

oh. My two childhood labs were racist. One seemed to have a dislike for black (dogs that is) and the other had a beef with a neighbor who always wore a hat when gardening. When they guy was not wearing a hat, he was cool.

Fedora?? I think your dog is anti-douche. When I see a guy in a fedora I immediately assume he is a douche.

There are quite a few fedora wearers in the city where I live.

Oh I should point out this was in Yunnan, not far from border with SE Asia, there it is more like SE Asia than mainland China. So the dogs there may be adapted to the locals who are probably friendlier to them, what being (at least in name) Buddhists and all.

dogs mostly bark at what they don't know, so i wouldn't think about a racist dog, except if he wasnt a stray dog

as I know a skin-dick-head back in italy who actually trained his dog to bark as soon as an asian or a black guy showed up..

I was gonna say that dogs pick up cues from their masters, so if master is suspicious or just acts different towards foreigners then the dog will follow the pack leader. This is for example a problem at airports where  some handlers are more suspicious towards certain people, and the dog will bark/signal "just to be sure".

This doesn't really make sense for strays unless this was learned behavior from earlier on.

2 and a half years ago I was bitten by a black cross breed labrador in Zhangjiagang. The wound left a 15cm gash in my arm which was quite deep. I was frantic and went straight to the hospital which conveniently was only a few minutes walk away. When I arrived they advise just  to run the arm under cold water for 2 hours, no offer of injections or cleaning the wound. I complained that as the wound was deep and the dogs saliva and possible bacteria would have entered the blood stream they still didn't seem to show interest. So I left and went to another hospital, were I received treatment by injection followed by a further 2. However after about 10 days my head became a little dizzy as I had read on the BBC website that a tourist from the Ireland or the UK had just died from a dog bite she had received whilst traveling in China several months previous. So I took a flight to London and went straight to the hospital, little extravagant maybe, however I needed to easy my mind and worry. A few week later I got the all clear. Well worth the expenditure.

Lord_hanson:

That sounds like you got the rabies injection. That is over 3 injections. The fever may have been due to the wound not being cleaned properly.

I thought most dogs were racist... youi know, only protecting their "Chosen people" - let all others die (often horribly) unless they convert to their ways, their traditions... starting wars, demanding sacrifices and all that...
