Q: Anyone ever use the cobbler or the knife sharpener?

I love these type of services.  I think we are quick to dispose of items that may have a little more run in them.  I wish cobblers hadn't gone the way of the Dodo in my home country.  How about you?  Do you use the knife sharpener guy on a bicycle with that blaring megaphone?  Ever used a cobbler on the street?

Yes, we have some knives that has been sharpened that way. It makes the knife great for a good week, then it goes dull again. I guess it is the quality of the steel that matters. I did the same thing back home (actually at only 10RMB or so per knife) and the results were different. This was a place that sold and maintained professional chefs equipment, the knife would be shiny and new looking and cut through anything like it was soft butter. The street cobbler is rough on the knives, the blades have scratches up the sides, and by the looks of it the angles he sharpens at are not that good (know an old dude that ran a metal workshop, he could sharpen knives too)

If the price is 5RMB or so per knife. Go for it. but remember a shit knife will always be a shit knife.

Yep, same here, 5 RMB per.  And yes, the knives are crap.  I guess they have a good business model.

this was the flaw Nokia had in the end 90ies and early 00es. Their product didn't break so no one ever bought new phones.

i used a street cobbler to fix the heels of my favourite pair of boots.

Good repair job and i think i amused him by the fact i wanted them repaired: my local friends said i should just replace them
