I got into a fist fight in January 2009.
The boss of the teahouse said we were all joking and playing. The police did not really believe us, but let it go.
They were drunk, I was not and they came at me one at a time.
Our previous landlord wouldn't give us back a 20 000 yuan bail.
There were leaks in the apartment, we told her countless times to send someone to fix it, but she refused, then we told her a few months in advance that we were moving out once the contract was over.
So of course, what she did was claim that we caused the leaks, didn't tell her about it, and that we also didn't mention at any point that we were moving out.
And guess what, they trusted her.
I think it's at that point that I understood why my friends who had been in China for a very long time always warned me that Chinese people were greedy and remorseless (I know, I know, not all of them are).
Even in China: When one has a lease or some form of rental contract and there are problems with the flat or apartment, it is ok to make phone calls to the landlord. However, all calls always should be followed up in writing to leave a paper trail IF any problems should arise later.
I had a similar problem and the landlord took me to court. I let her do this and at the first hearing presented all my documents. Case was dismissed and she had to pay for court costs and also give me some penalty money. LOL.
No! I did however see two girls when I was going to my embassy have some legal problems. I think it had something to do with their visa and they were a student and they needed to get out of the country before a certain time that wasn't possible.
Yeah, I overheard the conversation. The two girls were pretty panicky and were loud as could be trying to get this issue resolved. I'm almost certain that those two girls who couldn't get out of the country in time had to pay a fine. They were bummed out I could see it in their eyes and the look on their faces!
Experience may vary... I beat up my wife's family and the cops took my side. To be fair, they beat me first, caused brain damage, cracked my pucking skull, etc... I should've sued them, but I felt bad for my wife.
It helped that the neighbors knew me, and they always heard her mother doing her normal... screaming. They also knew I was trying to defend my wife, and one old guy saw everything from the window... he condemned them and acted as a witness against them. I was just praying my wife and our baby would be okay...
This is China. I've been into my share of fights, and I hate violence (I only use it if it's absolutely necessary). My recommendation is to just keep your head down and mind your own business, unless your life is in danger (run away), or a loved one's life is in danger (fight back). This place isn't worth it.
