I took some friends that were visiting about a month ago to Quan Ju De (Beijing duck) and Hai Di Lao (hot pot). Both restaurants are chains I think, and they enjoyed both. Also, a really nice Chinese vegetarian restaurant is Pure Lotus in Lido if they're into that stuff. Finally, I haven't been there yet, but I've heard that Dali Courtyard is really good. It just won some international award: http://www.echinacities.com/news/Beijing-Restaurants-Dominate-Best-Resta....

Agree with the above that Quanjude and Haidilao are good experiences for not a ridiculous amount of money. Also, I always take people to Huajia Yiyuan on Ghost Street (Dongzhimen Nei Dajie). There are two--you want the one that's on the western end of the street, not the one on the eastern end near the subway. The western one has some great choices of "Western favorites" which newcomers can easily tolerate, their prices are decent, I've never felt weird after eating their food (not a small consideration around here), and they have pretty cool decor. (Converted hutongs). They also have shows some nights, but I'd call and ask to make sure you hit the right time, and I'd make a reservation. Just FYI though, I think they only have shows in the smoking section. Like many places around here the really nice rooms/tables are all smoking. They relegate the low class non-smokers to the back rooms and tables.

I always take friends who visit Beijing to either Hengshan Hui (although it's a Cantonese joint), Lost in Paradise in Gulou (Yunnan) or some awesome duck restaurant which I can never remember the name of....it's on Chunxiu Lu which is between Dongzhimen and Paddy O'Sheas.

The famous Beijing Duck Restaurant. There is one close by to where I live at. It's across the street from the big shopping mall. You can have 8 to 10 people sitting at one table. The food is excellent and the service employee's are friendly!

At Silvas restaurant, you only get one duck per table, mostly bones cause another good restaurant served it once already and those customers actually got to eat the meat.
