Q: Anyone know what the current quarantine period is for North American expat returnees?
Or does that differ depending on original country of departure, entry port, final domestic destination, etc?
There was a recent change this past week (so I hear). 7 days hotel quarantine. The 7 days at-home restriction. Covid test within 48 hours of entry. I am not sure how many is required during the quarantines. The quarantine has been eased considerably. Unsure what will happen once cooler weather arrives in the Fall. In China, don't blink, or else policies change.
be prepared for testing every 72 hours.

China's lockdowns cost at least 46 billion a month.....
In Canada Comrad Trudea doesn't know what he is doing. A few days ago he said all restrictions are waved, but that could change if he said so

You mean if the pandemic situation changes for the worse they might have to change their current pandemic measures accordingly?
Eh?
If a doctor told you "the medicine you've been taking to control your rash seems to have worked, the rash has gone and you can stop taking the medicine now but if the rash comes back - there's no way to know for sure if it will but it might and if it does you might need to start taking those meds again" ... would you say the doctor doesn't know what he's doing?
It sounds like the obvious response to any crisis situation to me.

"WTO agrees to lift COVID vaccine patents for 5 years | Experts say deal comes 'too late' | WION"
"The WTO has finally agreed to lift all COVID vaccine patents for a period of 5 years. However, experts say the deal has come too late. It has also arrived on a deal to curb overfishing."
did I say TRUDEAU was a Doctor?
Stiggs:
No, I wasn't saying Trudeau is a doctor.
I'm forgetting this is a forum read by people with differing levels of English ability - my bad - I know the use of analogies can confuse some people so for those readers who somehow think my point was about Trudeau being a doctor I'll re-phrase it.
1. There's an emergency situation requiring action to deal with that emergency.
2. Someone (Trudeau in this case, acting under the advice of medical professionals) takes action, it's not convenient for anyone but there isn't a choice, something has to be done to stop the emergency becoming even worse.
3. The actions seem to work, the emergency situation is contained for now but there's no way of knowing if it's permanent, or if the emergency situation will become a serious threat again.
4. Trudeau tells people it's safe to ease back on those actions now, but if the emergency situation does become serious a threat again they may need to take action again to deal with it.
5. For extra clarity.....
* emergency situation ; in this case refers to the covid pandemic.
* action ; refers to covid measures.
This seems like a simple, common sense process to me and one that could be (and is) applied to most emergency situations.
3 weeks of isolation quarantine + another 2 weeks of self-quarantine. After 1,5 month you should be free to move around without any stars; subject to your city being corona free ofcourse. If you land in Shanghai or Beijing as entry port, expect longer quarantines, because these two cities are having long-term corona problems themselves.
Absolute minimum 3 weeks depending on the city.

And that's assuming they even let you in the country, last I heard getting through the borders was still problematic.
The only American expat that I know who was actually able to return is on a spousal visa and was traveling with her (Chinese passport) daughter.
Month long quarantine.
Stiggs:
I know two guys, both American, who have returned. Both had current RPs, one is married to a Chinese woman. If you don't already have that right to be in China I doubt you'd get in.
Both had to do 2 weeks in a hotel in the city they arrived in then another 2 weeks(think it was 2, might have been 1) in the city they live in.
Nothing special for Canada except depending on where you are leaving from and can show your vac shots. Having said that rules can change since there is the monkey virus and now 2 more variants are out "somewhere" I forgot. but you have access to the internet...Google it.
Cheers!
Safe travels
