Q: Anyone near Yibin, Sichuan?

I am entertaining a job offer from a school in one of the county towns.  Just wanted to check if anyone knows the area.  Salary is small, but work load is light and at least looks like the weather is warm with little pollution.

I know a nice girl who's from there, she doesn't have much to say about it though, seems like a typical lower tier city, a bit boring, not much in terms of entertainment.

Sichuan overall is less polluted than Eastern, Northeastern or Southern China simply because it's less developed, it it about a decade behind the rest of China in terms of infrastructures and consumer goods availability, but the climate there make it extremely humid all year round so instead of smog you will get a mix of mist and fog (and probably some smog still), very few sunny days. That's why white skin worshippers that are Chinese men say good things about Sichuan women, no sun, no tan.

Don't mistake me I love Sichuan, well at least Chengdu, the rest of the province has beautiful national parks but not much in terms of modern comfort..

Also forget about finding English speaking Chinese in Sichuan, there are some, but they are much less common than in most other provinces, those who can speak English tend to move in richer provinces to do business with overseas partners, so you will need Chinese there more than if you were living in coastal areas, in the wild west speaking Chinese is not a plus, it's a necessity.

If you have a major aversion to earthquakes Sichuan may not be your thing, I heard they get a few out that way.

I used to live in Chengdu, but my girlfriend is from Yibin so i've been there a few times.  I agree with most of what Eorthisio said.  It's not that well developed and has the generic look of any other lower tier Chinese city.  Don't expect to find anyone who speaks English, so if you don't speak Chinese you will struggle.  You said you have a light work load, but i'm not so sure that that's a good thing because in this sort of place there really isn't that much to do, unless you like KTV in the middle of the day.

Regarding the weather, summer is hot and winter is cold.  Similar to much of the central band across China.  Very humid, don't expect to see the sun too often.  My impression is that the pollution was actually worse that Chengdu, but that is just based on what I observed from being there and has no scientific basis at all.

Thanks guys.  The job is actually in Junlian, a county town of Yibin, so even smaller than Yibin.  I actually like the quiet places and my Mandarin is above survival level.  Just hope they speak Mandarin at least and not some mountain language. As for the humidity, I lived two years in Papua New Guinea, you don't get more humid than that.

DrMonkey:

From what I heard, Papua New Guinea is quite badass as expat gig. Sichuan will be piece of cake, and lots of nice place ^^

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
