every family is different, every city too. I dont have to give. Usually if your wife is from guangdong and your married. you give to kids and people unmarried. if your not married you get. Usually if your wife is from most other provinces youll be expected to give to children and elders or anyone who isnt working. Thats a generalization but most places have some variation of that.
Yup, 3 or 4 days with the family in-law. Playing card, reading, walking around, eating, drinking...
Robk:
That's basically what I do. I tell my clients to screw off... it's "gone to the village" time.
Yes. We are hosting. It made sense to me to move 4 people here as opposed to moving 2 people there.
this year i cant but therefore i m now 2 weeks at their home
Yup, I usually do... this is like the 4th to 5th year in a row. Luckily, my wife's family is just a couple of hours drive away. I normally just use the time to:
1) Eat a bunch of food
2) Play cards or MJ
3) Study & practice Chinese
4) Drink and just sit around
5) Throw some fire works/crackers around & visit some other family members

Sort of like a nice un-plugged vacation.
Sort of. I'm spending it with my flatmates who are all Chinese. None of them are going home. It is going to be fun. They have so much stuff planned. Their theme - All the fun of CNY without having to deal with parents.
cbrian:
let us know how that goes. It should be interesting to hear their experiences of festivals
past and what brought them to not travel home. Happy New Year to you al..
I'm going to spend it with my own Chinese family...my new wife and step-daughter...in a place far, far away from the in-laws.
This is my wife's idea because she doesn't want to be bored out of her brain doing CNY Chinese style.
And to be perfectly frank, I'm not unhappy about this. Her family are okay, don't get me wrong, but they are so boring. Hardly anything to say and all teetotal.
So we're going to catch some sun and fresh beer down in Yunnan.
The temps are forecast to be into the 30's by the time we get to Lijiang late next week.
I'm already excited by the prospect of having done interesting things earlier in the day and then sipping some nectar of the gods in the late afternoon sunshine with the two new girls in my life whilst we discuss what type of cuisine to have for dinner.

That sounds awesome bro! Have a great time, I think you found a keeper...
Lord_hanson:
You are making me jealous. I am going to the in laws. They live in freezing Liaoning.
yeah, I'm going to spend it with my family in Chinatown in America. Breathing fresh air all the way....
My Employer has arranged for me to spend CNY with one of my student's family. I'm slightly apprehensive about it but it should be fun..I hope someone there speaks English....lol
royceH:
Are you serious? No way, man. There won't be any English at all and all you'll do is make jiaozi and watch the stupid variety programme on tv.
Don't go.
donnie3857:
Who is your employer? some marketing thing. You must be getting at least 10,000 RMB for that.
WanderingTeacher:
Hahaha! Well what happened was, he asked me if I wanted to experience CNY like the locals and I said yes, to which he proceeded to tell me that he would be gone for two days to visit his parents in another province, so he would arrange for me to spend CNY with a students family instead who are: "Big and traditional Chinese family. They are very warmly, you can make Chinese dumplings, play and see fire, have big dinner and so on with them. I will arrange." I don't think it's a marketing plug or anything, seems like he just wants me to experience and enjoy China. This is going to be very interesting......
cbrian:
will be interesting to hear about this experience. Happy New Year to you and your student.
I am. My wife is from Beihai. Some of her cousins can speak passable English and both her Nieces speak enough English to carry a simple conversation. My brother in Law likes to drink. No one smokes. We go to her families home 5 nights of that week. My wife pre-orders salmon and other western dishes over the internet about a month in advance.
royceH:
Sounds okay Donnie.... Okay then, you can go.
What's the coast like at Beihai? How far down do Vietmam.
donnie3857:
Vietnam is 100 km west. The coast faces South. The water is polluted but the beach is long and wide.
