Yes. Been through the madness before...........definitely not worth it.

ScotsAlan:

Yup. Stay put. If you are thinking about it now you are already too late.

I'm out of here on the 13th for a trip back to the UK & a holiday in Italy with my wife.

I've stayed in GZ over spring festival once, a couple of years ago. It was great, empty metro system & relaxing.

We're going to Kashgar.  Shouldn't be any problem with masses of people as no Han want to go there due to fear and loathing.

And for the locals (90% of the population) it isn't Spring Festival at that time.

Last year we went to Yunnan and all was good until we got to Lijiang.  DO NOT GO THERE!

I loved Kashgar but I haven't been there since the 90s. The old town and markets were amazing. The people were very nice there.

royceH:

My friend has been there many times and she tells us that a good portion of the old town has been ripped down.  Something about improving standards.  Improving standards with a focus on Chairman Mao I'd suggest.

We'll be staying in a Uyghir place somewhere in what's left of the old town, so that's good.
