Q: Anyone teach English to students in preparation for the PETS 5 exam?

Wondering if there are any PETS 5 English teachers on here, as I prepare students for the exam and was wondering if well, anyone else does too..

It's a nationally recognised English language exam which allows Chinese to conduct a year's research abroad.

Anyone have some experience teaching students in preparation for this exam, I would be interested in your experiences of it.

Such an exam doesn't exist. There is Cambridge Preliminary English Test (PET).

Lucky you, some pets are running around this am.

Just a question.

Why choose PET when IELTS and TOFEL are the recognised standards at this time?

From what little I know about this from the wife's cousin, he needs IELTS or Tofel to study abroad. He tells me ielts is easier but both are laboriously boring to study. The few times I tried to help him confirmed this.

Maybe PET is the standard for working or something else?

Shining_brow:

That's because they're 'studying' IELTS and TOEFL like it's an exam....

Instead of actually trying to learn the language! (which is why scores for IELTS tend to be rather low... and once they get overseas, they suck!)

Agreed, they mostly suck, however, these two are the big ones. Perhaps, depending on the course, university and other things then PET is acceptable, but if it were me, I would be confirming that rather than buying tissues after a rejection letter.

PETS 5 -  a Chinese designed national English exam allowing successful candidates to conduct a paid year's academic research at an English speaking university.

Shining_brow:

Right - found it....

And, have your students bothered looking at the places they want to study in, to see if they will accept PETS as an English proficiency test???

Cos, perhaps amusingly, Wiki doesn't even provide a link to any...
