Q: Anyone using internet, provided by China Unicom ?
My wife want change the internet provider from China Telecom, to chana Unicom. the reason is the price is half cheaper. Now we pay about 200rmb monthly for "40Mbit/s" internet plus 300minits of calls+mobile internet" , Unicom price is about 1200rmb per year, with the payment in advance.
The problem for me is, that mobile service company often will lack something in the way to provide land-line internet. We have fibre optic line. as we asked, they do not provide router spliter with Wi-Fi, just the modem. we use 3 comps, 1 tablet and 2 mobiles at home connected. so it is needed. I am afraid, the internet speed will sucks as in the stone age and maybe the router i will buy will not be compatible with thirs modem. just my toughts. Your experiences ?

Early days for me with China Unicom. the system here in my accommodation is pre-pay 80 RMB per month. Quite slow and the down-side is trying to find a place that sells the cards needed for each month. I have only found 2 places so far and they were sold out, and no idea when they would have more in. I'd buy a few just to have back-up, but so far no luck. Nothing more technical than that i'm afraid.

Well in my case, they didn't provide the modem for free. They sold me one.
The internet terms can be confusing to a lot of people. Maybe you have already realized that, "40Mbit/s" internet allows a maximum download speed of 5MB/s, that's about downloading one MP3 music file in one or two seconds.
Due to the technical limitations of ADSL, which is widely used in China, the maximum of uploading speed is about 50kb/s, no matter how fast your downloading speed can be.
Do not be afraid that you might buy a router that incompatible to your modem. The industry standards are there.
I just bought a combined modem/wireless router yesterday at 360buy.com for about 120 yuan yesterday. If there are quite a few walls and doors at your home, I suggest that you should buy a good one so the wifi signal can be strong enough.
Are they going to get you a fiber optic line? Or just a fast broadband? I never used fiber optic line but I have heard that it would require a different modem.

Here is the optic fibre already. yeah, the max dn speed is 2-3Mb , coz I never ever downloaded nothign from china servers, so thats may be the reason, even MP3 i get for Cz or other places.

The connections into the DSLAM are copper (T1/T3/etc.) because the DSLAM is installed in the same location as all the traditional telephony equipment.
So they're symmetric (bi-directional) which means the same amount of download & upload speed is available to DSL customers.
There is no technical reason blocking ADSL from having a faster upstream than 50KB/sec.
The *REAL* reason they don't provision you with more upload is because they're selling that upload bandwidth to local companies as "SDSL" for 2x-4x the cost they're charging you for it.
All DSL modems can do SDSL too, but you need to be provisioned for it, and they won't unless you pay them 4x-10x as much money and set it up as a "business" solution with a static IP address and the works.
In short, they're intentionally crippling your upload speed for no reason other than money. Happens in the USA too. Verizon and Time Warner are the best examples of it. Where they'll hide the Internet speeds and the costs that they give to businesses from the public eye behind a smoke-screen of "sending somebody out to take a look and give a quote" instead of just publishing it on a website like they do for customer accounts.
