Q: Apart from being a mythical Norse creature, what's a Troll?
It seems that a lot of rather oversensitive Americans are referring to Trolls frequently. Why are they so paranoid about this subject?
I'm going to give you a benefit of the doubt and assume you really don't know.
A troll is someone who goes on the internet and starts an argument or posts something shocking/disgusting/controversial just for the sake of watching people react and having a laugh. For example, I could make an anonymous question like, "Baby killing: totally rad?" And inevitably some people would act all scandalized and I could have a good laugh. I don't actually kill babies, I just want to ruin people's lives on the internet, which is surprisingly easy.
It is a corruption of "trawl" (pronounced as "troll" in some accents) , a method of fishing. It's a pretty apt metaphor, I think.
