Q: Apart from WeChat, which specific platforms can you find online students in Hong Kong?

As an English tutor that used to teach online to Chinese students (from the UK), where would you advise finding private English students in Hong Kong, please? Not the mainland. Preferably not in WeChat.

There used to be many online apps that we could use but then payment became a problem when China cracked down on foreign workers.

Any advice/names of groups/apps/platforms would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I feel like these platforms will be like VPNs, people will be reluctant to share them online because of worries they'll be shut down.

That being said though, after years of wanting nothing to do with it I recently started using Facebook again because there are groups there advertising jobs, talking about covid visa developments etc and I've seen groups dedicated to online teaching - I'm pretty sure I've seen people talking about platforms etc and I know I've seen lots of people advertising for online teachers.

If I were you I'd go on Facebook, check out some of these adverts and find out what they use - you might need to pretend you're interested in working with them but I doubt their platform is any big trade secret they're refusing to disclose.

The same with Reddit.

Thanks but I’m in lots of FB groups already. :-)

If you're in the FB groups dedicated to online teaching you're probably looking in the right place, or at least one of the better places to find what you're looking for.

I don't remember any poster here would be in HK ... in the last 10-years or so.

You should know, HK was not really part of the mainland some few years ago, so I don't think any info out of HK will be forthcoming.

I was (lived for a month or so) in HK several times and I would never, ever accept the job offer there 'cause of people's congestion. Imagine, every single elevator in the city has a queue ...

I think, there are some 4 people per m2 in HK ...

You should look for the info on HK at Dave ESL Cafe, if it still exists.

I'm not in HK now. I was talking about students that are in HK.

I used to teach students in the mainland and HK online.

Thanks again for your advice.

Oops, two people have marked my question down already. Sorry if I offended anyone!

Downvotes are from Chinese bots ... 'cause HK students should remain stipud and everyone should teach only mainland students.

Online classes with non-Chinese teachers who are not physically in China don't happen anymore. Good luck, but you're wasting your time.

Stiggs:

I agree with you for the most part and the big online companies that used to do this are probably gone but I just saw yet another advert looking for online teachers to teach Chinese students.

It was apparantly a new startup online school, there's clearly a market there and I guess people are figuring out how to fly under the radar to take advantage of it.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
