Q: With apartment buildings constructed this decade, how long are they expected to stand for?
This decade? My friends tell me that 20 years would be about "right".
They are expected to stand for as long as they can until the govt. decides to tear them down!
With todays advanced building designs and from what I see of building maintenance (trees growing on buildings), Chinese litter and abuse of everything, and by using only the finest grade of sidewalk cement, I think about 10 years before the building becomes a slum.
To my knowledge, there is no set rule as to the number of years until torn down. It will depend mainly (in my opinion) of developing needs for the particular land where the building stands, building condition rate of deterioration condition of building), and location. And of course, a developer with the right "guanxi" interested in the land plot.
Having worked in a architect firm, we just spray "design life - 50 years" on everything with no consideration at all on how it's designed or constructed. With the crappy maintenance and incredibly shitty construction practices I've seen, even 10 years would be pushing it. But hey! If the buildings keep falling down, I'll keep having stuff to do right?
AND ITS VERY STRANGE THE PEOPLE 2000 YEARS AGO BUILT THINGS THAT
ARE STILL STANDING BUT MODERN TECH IT MIGHT LAST ???
