Q: Are all Chinese hospitals built in the 1930s?
I took My wife into the City to get a small operation
the place was that old I have expected the Doctor to be warring a Gray Mao suit with the little red star on the hat
the walls were newly white washed but the pipe work was rusty
the electricity lines ( I think they had electricity) was hanging on anything higher than the ground
and the smell was like what Ted must have come home too when the house sitter went feral
But the thing that stood out the most was when the doctor looked at the X-rays taken in Australia
and commented on how much better they were to what they have in China!
So this got me thinking . Australia like many other country"s around the world have borrowed Billions of $ from China, with little capacity at this time to pay China back.
So why cant they do a trade off on some of the dept and do something that will benefit people from all countries including China and teach China how to do things better?or help build things like hospitals

You can easily find buildings that look 100 years old but with the latest imagine equipment from Siemens. This is a general problem that the concept of maintenance does not exist in China, things are under construction or falling apart (or sometimes at the same time)
If you in a moderately sized city go to a couple of hospitals you will find some have antiquated gear, others have new stuff. Generally they use xrays where in the west CT or MRI would be picked, e.g. to spot tissue damage from tuberculosis, xray is close to useless, still it is the preferred method.
you should take the wife to a better hospital for her no matter how small the problem.
Cause those are the ones that will actually last more than ten or 12 years....
Well pointless them having new, you beaut hospitals when the practices employed there (doctors, nurses, "specialists" or professors) remain 1950's style. At least now when you walk into a Chinese hospital you just KNOW you are going to be in trouble!
Nanning appears to be building one new hospital each week! We've almost got more hospitals than people, I absolutely do not see how they can all make a profit.

Except for the deserted building project just up the road from us on Fuziling Road. It was meant to be a children's hospital but has not got past the basic building stage yet, all the frame work is there but nothing else and it has been like that for as long as I have been living here which is two years. Probably the hongbao was not large enough or something like that

What are you smoking? FFS if you genuinely live in Nanning then if you have half an eye, half an ear and half a brain you MUST of seen the freaking hundred hospitals built in the last few years?
I am not saying they are all brilliant (I haven't used more than 2 or 3), but to deny they are being built is Ostrich bull of the most ignorant kind.

On a historical note, very few large public buildings are from the 1930's, except in Harbin, Shanghai, and other cities with a historical presence of foreign invaders.

Erm actually I would disagree with many of the comments above. In my experience the best (local-style) hospital I've been to is one of those 1930's ones. Because the doctors there actually tried to do their jobs. On the other hand I've been to much more modern looking hospitals where the doctors all try and send you on your way with literally bucket-loads of medicine that you just don't need. Worry about the quality of the staff more than the facilities - well unless you need a bed in which case the environment becomes more important. And of course there are 1930s hospitals with bad staff too but... you get my point.
It doesn't matter when they were built because even a hospital that was built in China as recently as 5 years ago looks like it was built in the 30's. Substandard workmanship with a careless attitude will make any new building here "age" quickly.

Some were built during the 1860s, 1920s, and 1940s. I've yet to visit a "modern" hospital in China, aside from a few overly-expensive maternity hospitals like "Maria," and those aren't very impressive either.
The doctors are an utter joke at most places too. Smoking, driving motorcycles in the frigging hallways (I have pictures), blood stains all over the floors, pouring blood into opened, non-sterilized vials, xrays without ANY shielding whatsoever, and all types of crazy stupid crap.
Not to mention hospitals aren't usually running 24/7. Got a problem at night? Better wait until tomorrow morning. We called 8 different hospitals and an emergency number in Hunan/Changsha, and got told to wait until tomorrow morning.
Oh yeah, let's not forget all the unclean, rusty beds.
well I'm not sure about most of your statement above, but if emergency room isn't open 24/7, a billion Chinese don't have to wait for you to complain here, they would have already torn the hospital down themselves...
Practice your Chinese to get your point across - that you need the fix NOW, or find a Chinese who could.... For the record, my mom delivered me in the wee hours of the morning, if the hospital is like you said, you wouldn't see me typing here would you?

I'm downvoting you because my wife is the one who made the calls - not me. Don't make apologies for shatty Chinese hospitals. Furthermore, you do not need to give birth in a hospital in order to survive. That's terrible logic...
and I agree with the most, unless you the modern looking hospital has a good reputation, I would rather go to the 1930 looking one. Those have made through the test of the ages, and the doctors in there are known by the people living in the neighborhood. Just walk around, talk to a couple people, and you'll know who you should book for your next appointment (yes, you could reserve your own doctor if you haven't figured that out too.)
