I plan to go on vacation and discover parts of the south as soon as possible, and so will most likely be going to the beach.
I imagine showing skin here isn't exactly the same as it is everywhere else, and so wanted to know if I'd get excessive stares for dressing in a bikini, or if I should just go ahead and buy a one-piece suit.
The fact that you are foreign means they will stare no matter what you wear. A bikini might make the stares linger longer, especially if you look great in it. No matter what you do, they will stare, so wear whatever you are comfortable in.

yes, if you are a beautiful girl, people (especially for most of men, like me ) just watch and discuss with others your body shape in private.
You can wear whatever you like in chinese beaches... if you look tooo sexy in 2 piece.. then ppl will look... no matter u r in europe/US or China.. no difference...
Chinese girls wear bkini in most beaches i have been to..
Not wearing anything is a crime..
Chinese women wear bikinis, so it's ok.
Just know that even when fully clothed you will probably be stared at (if not a huge city or tourism place), so the bikini won't really make much of a difference. Except perhaps REALLY insisting stares and whispered comments...
Be yourself. It's a great loss if you can only enjoy the beach without exposing your natural beauty. Just show your way of life to the locals .
60% of the beaches in the south have a "pretty foreign woman must be topless law" so abide by the law

Isn't that the same beach all men have to be blindfolded and duct taped to surf boards sticking in the sand? ;)
It's the same in most countries, if you look good in a bikini you might get some passing glances from men, no more no less than in Europe or America. Down south on the beaches it is perfectly normal to wear a bikini, and most girls do, girls aren't afraid to show off their bodies like it is stereotyped sometimes.
I do visit places like Sanya, BeHai, etc a few times a year, since I do love the sea and swimming. What I have seen there are ladies in one piece suit (mostly older), younger ones with what we may call a bikini from 1960 or so (not string bikinis), and sometimes the bottom part will have a small skirt attached to it. Funny do, some wear their bra under the bikini top, maybe if they remove it will loose as much as two cup sizes......
Another I have seen many times is for them to wear a short, and on top a T-shirt with a bra underneath.
So, as long as it is not a string bikini, or go topless or nude, you will be OK. And yes, no matter what, they will stare at you.
Do not bring anything of value to the beach, things get lost pretty fast when you are in the water. A towel, a pair of sandals, maybe a shirt or robe, and your hotel key. Do bring a little money in case you feel like buying a soda or a fruit. Keep money in a plastic bag under your bathing suit.
And if you see a few gathering around a person holding towels up on the air, that person is changing clothes, you are not supposed to stare at them. But sometimes I do, if it is windy is even better.
