Q: Are bus fees 0.4 yuan everywhere in China?
I was reflecting this morning on how wonderful it is to only pay 0.4 yuan for a bus ride here in Beijing. Compared to France or even Canada (where I think it's 3 dollars per bus or metro ride), it's crazy how cheap things are here.
Are all bus rides this cheap where you live? I wonder how the public transportation even makes any profits at all.

No, they are different all over China. They were never that cheap in the places I went. In the city where I stayed, a 3rd tier city, the fee was 1.5 yuan, a little cheaper if you used a card. I think it is more expensive in other cities like Wenzhou, maybe 2 yuan.
0.4? Really? Not 4? It was one quai in Urumqi, I'd have expected Beijing to be more expensive.

Beijing seems to be the cheapest here. Even the subway, only 2元 to go anywhere in the city, where as Tianjin and Shenzhen, and probably others, but I've never used others, are distance fares, can't go any further than 2 or 3 stops for 2元 here in Shenzhen.
The buses here, well the cheapest I have been on was 1元， with the 深通 card stil 8毛. Average bus seems to be 2-3 元, but again most are distance fares, most buses have an assistant asking you where you are going and charging you based on distance, my average bus fare is between 3-8 元 with the card. Based on my experience, the buses I have used without the assistant are usually shorter routes and cost 3元 whether you go 1 stop or the entire route. In Tianjin the cheapest bus I was on was 2元, I think there are also some 1元 ones too.
I know Beijing has distance fare buses too, but the most I ever paid on a bus there was from Miyun county to Dongzhimen, 90 minute ride, 5.6元 at the time, with the bus card. I think my trip to the great wall was only 4元. I also realise the cheapest buses in Beijing are also 1元 but the discount from using the card is much greater there, also you can hand the card over and get the balance and deposit back, where as here in Shenzhen my deposit is charged a certain amount monthly until it reaches 0 at which point I have purchased the card.
Here in Kaiping - 2 RMB per ride, I never seen less then 1 RMB, but... i never used it in Beijing.
Beijing must be an exception, like in many things it is :)
I never though, that this place is as good example of China (in any way, shape or form).
Beijing is administrated directly, but most of other cities live on own budgets and local government regulations. And this can be cause of differences.
1 RMB in Guiyang City. Without card. Bit cheaper with card but no idea how much.
10 RMB for a taxi (mostly one can manage within that limit from one place to another as the city is small).
Nanning; the two air conditioned bus routes (39 and I think, 6) are 1.5RMB the rest (non air conditioned 1RMB. This time of year it's a real blast, 35C and a crowded bus means you get hot smelly armpits shoved into your face! 
One of the main reasons I got myself an e-bike.

Hugh, the air conditioned routes are 2 yuan unless you have a prepaid IC card which gets you 10% reduction on individual fares. Where do you get 1.5 yuan from?

Hmm ok prices must of gone up, I've been using the e-bike now for ages. It's been a year (or more) since I used the buses and I then I used the 39 or 1 every day, (we've moved flats since) it was 1.5 or 1 then.
same 2 rmb in WUHAN .buut if we use card its more cheaper ,...1.3, 1.6 etc
1 yuan in Guilin, someone told me if you're over 60, the bus is free, don't know if that is correct tho.
They make a profit becasue the buses are always full. I'm not sure if the buses are mainatined well or just built poorly, because they ride like they ride like they have a broken shock.
I found taxis to be cheap , average ride is 10 Y.
in my city if i use bus card i pay 0.80 yuan and if i don't use card i pay 1yuan,
In Nanning, there are two basic bus fares, if A/C on the bus it is 2 yuan per ride, if no A/C it will be one yuan. now, that is if you pay cash, if you use a prepaid card, the fare is 10 % cheaper.
In Jinan it is .90..in Wuhan .90 for non Air Conditioner and 1.80 for AC..if you dont have bus card..the pay in round figure..
That is very cheap in Beijing !
I used to stay in Shenzhen, minimum is 2 RMB, if your cross the town, generally you have to pay more ...
currently I am in Dong guan city, a little bit more expensive than Shenzhen and not good as Shenzhen ... very sad for this ...

Kunming it is 1RMB for regular bus, 2RMB for air conditioning
If you pay cash, a lot of the bus fares here in GZ are 2kuai. But, u get a small break for using your tong....
It seems usually 1rmb for non-air conditioned and 2rmb for air conditioned .
in jinan , one rmb for local routes , k line buses are air conditioned 2 rmb, some routes to suburbs more than 20 km charge 2 to 12 rmb depending on distance.
the card is purchases for 10 rmb and you get a ten percent discount on each use or you put photo only card and pay 50 rmb monthly for unlimitied rides on 1 rmb bus routes only. monthly is not good for 2 rmb air condition or long routes. no free transfers, if you take 2 buses to get somewhere you pay twice or scan card twice.
You are wrong about that number. THey also have distance fares on some of the buses. If you take a long ride they could charge you well over 10 kuai. Most of the buses here start at 1 kuai to 2 kuai, and then you have to check if the bus is a distance fare which can cost you some real cash.
