Q: are cars smaller here?

i'm 1m95, so tall to begin with.
but i can't remember getting into so many cars where my head touches the ceiling. foreign-made brands like buick and fiat too. aren't they made for tall westerners?
there's no excessive upholstery that takes up space… do they make the seats higher so the lilliputters can see the road better?

Not to my knowledge.  Buicks are a lot more spacey than other brands here too.  I'm much more happy in a Regal than the same class of Audi it competes with.  Much much more space. And haven't you seen the huge number of range rovers and jeeps on the road? Not exactly my definition of small.

Yep. Read the car reviews and this is considered to be their answer to that specific Audi model.  Price wise there's almost no difference... it comes down to car performance and size pretty much. I find the Buick to already drive much better than most of your vanilla brand cards (the Fords, Chevrolets, Pigots of the world) so I'm easily satisified with that. At the same time it has its specific touch with being much fancier on the interior and more spacey to boot - for me space is a huge need. You aren't gonna find a sizeable trunk on an audi. And that has come in very useful with moving to the new house!  That space is a big reason why I passed on anything offered by VW while I found a model of Skoda to be doable. The only other vehicle I have sat comfortably in was a Range Rover, the Chinese regional boss of a certain company I need not name told me "你的块头太大“ (meaning I'm a bigger sized guy) haha.

i will argue one point.  price in USD buick regal starting price 27K , audi A4  36K.  About the same for a same size caddy BMW or Benz. Thats a 10K difference!  The size might be the same but to put it as a luxery car is a reach.  No one looking to buy Buick can just up and decide to get a German car.  In China the difference between the two in starting price is about 100K !   Much closer to a mazda in price then a Benz.  if you wanted to go top spec Buick to lowest spec Audi you might have a case. But top to top and Bottom to bottom they are not in the same league.

Regal is a higher class of Buick (luxury sedan) but it is not their top model.  It equates sorta on the level of the entry level Audi and the difference was only about 20K RMB here. When you're car shopping that's not a big deal and you decide on other factors.  I found the Audi to be super cramped and not practical to my needs...  there's a diverse market out there so everybody gets what works for them I suppose.   One other thing I noticed is that Buick's Lacrosse is basically on par with Audi's when it comes to being the car of choice for businessmen or other types.  These are the two cars of choice for rich business types who want to show off class without actually showing off real wealth.

Not too sure about the specs on the Regal, but I see a few of them around where I live and I like the exterior and interior on them. I might look into them more.

I also like the look of the KIA K5 (I believe it is), those look quite nice too.

I'm not sure about Chinese cars, buTT....if you plan for long-term stay in China, you could maybe look into the 'bonsai' technique.

Don't think so, the cars I've driven that are available in Europe too seems to be the same. They've Americanized the suspension though for a crappier driving experience.

yeah man, you must be going in alot of cheap cars. Thats kind of how it works.  Even your examples are flawed.  Buicks are not for Westerners anymore. The main market is easily China. And if you were in a Buick excel, then your definitely in for a tough ride. Fiats were always meant to be cheap city cars. Big and luxurious they are not.

hi2u is right. Most western Auto makers actually have models in China that are much larger than back in Western countries.

Your just not having the greatest experiences. And your Uber tall, you should be used to it by now,

I don't think so. They actually seem a little larger as Chinese think that the bigger the car... the better. However, the tires do seem smaller on many models and I read somewhere that they were...

Maybe you are just used to SUVs and Pick-up trucks or something.

Im a bit surprised at all the rhetoric of Chinese cars being small and western ones being bigger.  I do know that some car brands specifically created more space in their interiors simply to become more desirable in the Chinese market.  In the West we are downsizing due to gas mileage and the realization that huge gas guzzlers aren't good for the planet. I've seen a few Smart cars on the road here but they're a bit of a gimmick and an exception to the norm....  which are huge range rovers, audi's, bmw's, or higher end buicks.

coineineagh:

i just wonder why the seating space of these outwardly impressive cars is so small. I admit I get into a lot more different cars now than back home. I expect comfort akin to a Renault Scenic, but instead i'm folded with my knees to one side and a bent neck because i can't sit straight. Adjusting seat can only do so much. Lousy designs. 1m95 is hardly an extreme height, so why are many of these cars too small for me?

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
