Q: Are children ever afraid of you?

I thought I would never have this problem, since I am a young woman, and I often smile. What's so scary about me? But for some reason, there is a little boy in one of my classes, who at first sight of me bursts into tears. He'll cry for a couple of minutes, while the rest of the children just sit there looking bored. But hey, he's getting better. Now it's only for 2 or 3 minutes, and he doesn't need a parent to be with him anymore. The funny thing is that after he's done crying, he kind of likes me. What's the deal? Have any of you scared children?

Most of the time no. The only type of kid that ever cried around me was the kid that misbehaved. When I was teaching in Korea and even here in China a lot of the kids even called me friend. I never had that type of trouble only for the troubled kids that knew they did something wrong. It sounds to me like the kid in your class could probably be really young and I have seen kids that cry because they may be scared of that environment it's the first time and they don't know what's going on. Happens all the time! I also saw this happen with a female teacher in Beijing the kid cried but after the class started and she was interacting and doing the motions with her parents she got really happy.

Yes, some kids are afraid of me.  I try to smile a lot, but it doesn't work.  While I've never had anyone burst into tears upon sight, I've had a kid turn 180, run and shout "bairen" upon sight.  Also many kids who stare from doorways, and hide behind the corner when I look over (only to continue staring when I look away again).  Also a few kids who sit in class and stare at me with a look of complete fear, and many who try to bury their faces behind books.

I don’t teach small kids but with my teens I demand respect and hard work in return it is reciprocated. Some students find this a difficult concept as they are pandered to by local staff.

No...and I don’t understand why...I don’t really like other peoples children, and really don’t like being around them...but for some reason...children like me a lot...or maybe they smell my disdain. I love my daughter though, but as far as me bing with her when she is fraternizing with other children, thank God for my ANGEL of a wife....a true godsend!

I like a snowy Happy new year, rather than a no sky one...Beijing's time to ban the cars---the only solution for the time being...

Some have been, but most small ones just  stare and the bigger ones just practice their "hello, how are you" routine.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
