Q: Are children not people in China ?

It seems to me, people treat children more like an accessory or toy than an actual human being. Like they don't have emotions or any grasp on the world.

Opinions

Fun fact. China has a law that dictates all passengers of a vehicle must use seatbelts, however there is no low about childrestraints.???

'Childestrians' as little pedestrians. I see, you wrote 'child restraints'

I guess, cops assume kids in the cars are always tied up, like a 'little beasts' they are.

How many people in China actually use a seatbelt? Maybe the taxi driver. For the rest, I hardly see any seatbelts are used while driving.

Burak43:

To be fair, based on my un scientific observations about 90% of drivers use seatbelts, about 25% for the passenger seat, and 0.001% for children and passengers in the back seat (I've seen 2 child seats during my two years in China)

ChineseAmerican:

The reason that they are using it is due to the fact that if you do not click your seatbelt, the car will keep making annoying sound when it is in motion.

I agree partly, a lot of people I see do treat their children like a fashion accessory to be used later in life to support the parents. Also I hate the parents who let their children run riot wherever they are irrespective of how much of an annoyance they are to other people. There does seem to be a severe lack of good parenting skills with a lot of people but I do know some Chinese that are very good parents and would be mortified if their children behaved in the way that some precious little brats do.

Yes two lots of parents use car seats, and I only know three couples with children. Not many but 66% of the ones I know are aware of the dangers and take their responsibility serious. The only pity is the small number who do it right are heavily outnumbered by the number that couldn't give a sh**.

I think the reason for it could be either  cultural or due to a lack of awareness, and on this particular point I think its a bit of  both.

Cultural in the sense that China is not an individualistic community so children are seen as a part of a collective "everyone can have kids, everyone was a kid once and kids have a collective duty to their parents and will be beaten until they they comply with the rules that everyone else had to follow before them. And because of that when they grow up they'll make sure that those in those in their peripheral will pay the same respects for the betterment of  the middle state, the Centre of the world!" Vs the welfare culture that seems to say "you're a kid, you're so special and hence we will adhere to your every wish.Never mind the fact it might let you grow into an individualistic asshole who doesn't care about the well being of others in the community(its a global community by the way)".

With time,I believe people will find a balance.

Lack of awareness because, its only been a few years compared to some parts of the world that private cars became popular in China.

yup. but especially in a family centric society where you know you will depend on your children when you are old, you'd think people would treat them so they are likely to come visit once grown up

expatlife26:

I remember when I was a kid in the UK, I would sit on my grandad's lap as he would drive along the motorway. I remember standing on the back seat looking out the rear window.

I also remember when they brought in the seatbelt law in the UK.  It took years of non stop advertising campaigns to get people to wear them.  Anyone remember Jimmy Savile and his clunk click every trip?

Even today, I know adults in the UK who refuse to wear a seat belt in the back of a car.

I think the resistance to seatbelts in the west is down to people resenting being told what to do by the state. It's a freedom of choice issue.

In China, I think the issue is people not being able look ahead to the consequences of their actions or inaction.

It still amazes me when I see the look of utter shock on peoples faces when things go wrong. Such as the cyclist who cycles the wrong way around a busy roundabout and then looks totally flabbergasted when he is almost wiped out by a 55 ton truck.
