My gut says "no"...
Have there been any studies published on this? Or scandals?

The standard story on the street here is that about 40% of the condoms produced locally either break or leak. I have heard this story repeatedly since I have been here, with variations on the percentage, however.
Buy only durex.. even that one broke once.. ! forget abt chinese brands.. the consequences of failure is not something worth taking the risk comparing the price..
I have also heard the same story like 9819....so you can not bank upon local brand..
breakage and rashes. chinese condoms and lube. do not use at any cost ...... yes do not use at any cost..... using chinese condoms is an option that should never be on the table.
I have also heard the same story like 9819....so you can not bank upon local brand..
There have been studies on it, many are fake and lubed with vegetable oil
No, they're not effective or safe.
My girlfriend has told me about how her ex-boss always used condoms and she's had to abort 3 babies now.
I import mine from abroad. You just need the English name of your Chinese address and you can get pretty much anything.

How do u import ? can give more details? in general... not just condoms..
Sidicas:
Some Durex condoms sold at the smaller stores are fake and/or recycled / repacked box. I guess if you buy from the bigger stores, you should be OK.
I stock up from:

I have not and never will use them. With something so important why take the chance?
I always bring a large supply of Trojans when I go to China and if I run out and have no choice I use the local Durex ones...the ones that actually fit.
no idea, but i would never risk it, i usually get mine from hk, get me enough to last for a while lool
I dont know. I bring mine from the US when I come back from holiday....
NOt for people who can't read instructions or don't know how to use them properly. All in all to some degree there will always be defects down the road.
JackieChan:
More proof that you never have girl friend, you must read instructions on condom box. I didn't know there were any.
The last box of Durex I bought had different condoms mixed in the packages, some lubed, some not, that were not what I bought. How the hell does that happen? I would think a machine spits them out. China has no quality control. I can swear that they leak, but leak in. Yes?? wtf.
Sidicas:
Durex does sell some variety packs.. If it wasn't a variety pack, then it was probably a repacked box.. Repacked by the store because customers steal the condoms inside the box because they're too embarrassed or too poor to buy them. Perhaps because they're too young for it to be socially acceptable. I've never seen Chinese steal condoms, but I've heard they're more likely to steal condoms than most other daily essentials, so a lot of stores put the condoms up right by the register so the register worker can watch.
If you get a repacked box, it doesn't necessarily mean it's fake as Durex often ships "free samples" or "extras" for stores to give out which somehow potentially end up in these repacked boxes and sold... But there are fake Durex condoms out there, especially on websites like Taobao.
WonHungLo:
I bought one kind of durex condoms and they were all joined together, not repacked. inside were wrong condoms of a few different types. Crappy Chinese quality control. These came from a drug store. I'd need a suitcase just for condoms if I brought them from home.
The risk is simply too great considering what STD's are out there and readily available. Try Hong Kong if you can't bring them from home or some of the major pharma's in Beijing and Shanghai that carried imported items. I don't want to be rude, really I don't, but there is also the size issue.
