Q: Are Chinese justified in thinking the Western media demonize them?

Since 2008, China has been trying to appeal to the West by putting more emphasis on soft power and giving the world a more positive image of the country. But the harder they try, the worst it seems to get. Their obvious response is that Western media is countering their push for credibility and recognition by demonizing them.

In turn of course, Chinese people are fed the belief that the West profoundly hates China and Chinese people, which really couldn't be further from the truth.

Is it really so hard for Chinese 'strategists' to conceive that you can't polish your image internationally while still being jerks domestically and hope to make friends? It's like the guy beating the crap out of his wife and kids at home and then being puzzled at why his neighbors don't return his hello.

It seems it is that hard. If anything, I think the western media tends to be scared of China; they seem to think we're all going to be bowing and scraping to mighty China in ten years.

My time here has cured me of that fear!

nevermind:

Me too.

I tell all my friends these people couldn't run a doughnut shop.

MissA:

Funny you say that. There's ONE doughnut shop in the city where I live, and of the three times I've tried to get dougnuts there, twice I've given up in frustration because the concept of the crazy order of "two doughnuts in a box" (with pointing) is too much for the girls behind the counter!

That reminds me. When I was in high school, we had some kind of assembly where the vice principal quoted stuff from a book about that very subject, saying that China was going to take over America or some other crap. Of course, that was over 6 years ago and nothing has happened.

Uh, I think he meant "No, they are not justified".

But yeah, even locals eventually complain about it. They want to move on from breastfeeding to the baby bottle, damnit!

They just make this accusation because they can't argue the facts. The facts are that China doesn't play by the rules in most of its economic dealings.

It isn't much different than the US arguing that the UN doesn't do a good job protecting human rights while at the same time being one of the main violators of international law.

No, but true to Chinese form the hypocrisy is thick. Chinese media completely demonizes the west. It is unbelievably over the line.

What these people don't understand is that western media is just as hard on its own countries.

No, they're not. What they don't understand (because they have no independent way of finding out) is that there is something in the West called freedom of speech. This means that people can freely and frankly propose divergent opinions on any topic without fear of having to run to an American Embassy. Some people support China, some don't and some others are realists who accept that China's international economic rise has not been met with a similar change to human rights domestically. This is all stuff that must be discussed if present and future difficulties are to be resolved peacefully, at home and abroad.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
